Abstract: Oximes are prepared by reacting an aqueous solution of a hydroxylamine salt with an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic aldehyde or ketone in the presence, either at the beginning of the reaction or after the reaction has started, of both a weak acid having a dissociation constant of 2 x 10-1 to 10-6 at 25 DEG C., and at least one soluble salt thereof in such a ratio that the pH of the reaction mixture during the first and greater part of the reaction is in the range 1-4, recovering the oxime and separating the dissolved salt from the acid liberated during the reaction. Specified weak acids are ammonium bisulphate, phosphoric, formic, acetic, lactic, citric and benzenesulphonic acids. It is preferred to use a hydroxylamine salt derived from the weak acid, and to use the acid recovered from the reaction mixture to form further hydroxylamine salt starting material. To effect complete conversion to the oxime to pH of the reaction mixture during the last part of the reaction is raised to a value greater than 4, e.g. by adding ammonia. The process is illustrated by referceen to flow diagrams (not shown).

Abstract: 1,249,613. γ-Cyanobutyraldimines. STAMICARBON N.V. 3 Feb., 1970 [8 Feb., 1969], No. 5124/70. Heading C2C. γ-Cyanobuturaldimines are prepared by reacting an acetaldimine with acrylonitrile in a molar ratio of at least 0À8 : 1 at at 70‹ to 130‹ C. and separating the non-converted starting materials from the product after not more than 50% of the acrylonitrile has been converted. The acetaldimine preferably contains a secondary or tertiary carbon atom bound to the nitrogen atom such as N-cyclohexyl and N-tbutylacetaldimines. The reaction mixture is preferably anhydrous although the reaction may be carried out in an organic solvent. By-products of the reaction include cyclohexylamine, N- cyclohexyl crotonaldimine (which may be hydrolysed to crotonaldehyde) and N-t-butylcrotonaldimine.

Abstract: A process for the high pressure polymerization of ethylene in an autoclave reactor is disclosed, wherein the autoclave contents are maintained in a thoroughly mixed condition by converting the pressure energy of the ethylene feed into kinetic energy by throttling the flow of ethylene feed into the autoclave, to create a turbulent flow wherein the Reynolds number exceeds 2100, to produce macroscopic circulations in the autoclave. Such a process has numerous advantages, primarily in the reduction of the number of explosive decompositions of ethylene. Apparatus for conducting such a process are also disclosed, wherein such apparatus includes an autoclave having at least one ethylene feed inlet which imparts a rotary motion to the autoclave contents.
