    Abstract: Metal cans are welded by frictional treatment of the materials joined. The treatment is provided by a rapidly rotating smooth hard friction tool e.g. wheel contacting a surface of the metal above the join while the parts joined are held in pressure contact by independent pressure exerting means and/or by the wheel itself. In the formation of can side-seams the wheel and the can are relatively traversed and a longitudinal continuous side-seam is formed which in the case of metal to metal joints is metallurgically homogeneous and may be characterized in that no signs of melting of the base metal are visible at the welded interfaces.

    Abstract: A method for forming a connection between two tubes or pipes is disclosed in which a depression is formed around the opening in the primary tube which receives the end of the secondary tube. A suitable solder material, such as a brazing compound, is applied to the juncture between the two tubes. When the solder material is melted, by passing the assembly through a brazing furnace for example, the molten solder pools in the depression from which it can flow into the space between the two pipes. A method for simultaneously inserting the secondary tube and forming the depression is also described.

    Abstract: Solid phase or pressure welding of adjacent pipe ends is accomplished by placing a pair of expandable elements maintained in axial alignment within the pipe ends and radially expanding the elements into firm grasping relationship with the interior bore walls of the respective pipe ends. Thereafter, the elements are axially moved together to place and hold the pipe ends in axially aligned abuttment and create upset pressure in the region of the abutting ends while heat is applied thereto to produce a solid phase welded joint between the pipe ends.

    Abstract: A duct of thermal insulation is jacketed with a gas impermeable sheet material with a longitudinal seam formed by turning the mating ends of the sheet material outwardly and thermally fusing those ends into a linear nodular bead. In the case of metal foils of a few thousandths of an inch in thickness the bead is of the order of a thirty-second of an inch and is turned into the foil jacket to present a smooth non-cutting surface. Semi-butt welds of foil are made by clamping the foil in face to face relationship along an essentially line contact and moving an arc welding electrode with associated gas jets for a nonoxidizing gas parallel to and in close spaced relation to the clamp line. Jacketing for preformed ducts of glass or other fiber type insulation is drawn from a supply of sheet stock to form a catenary loop in which a preformed duct is placed. Jaws forming unitary clamps and welding electrodes are closed to close the opposite sides of the loop of foil around the duct and upon each other. The foil is severed closely adjacent the clamps and the electrode with its jets for the gas is moved along the exposed edges of foil adjacent the electrode clamps while drawing an arc to fuse the opposed foil surfaces together. The clamps are then released, the jacketed duct removed from the welding apparatus and the radially extending, fused foil bead pressed parallel to the outer face of the duct.

    Abstract: 978,915. Welding by pressure. STEWART & LLOYDS Ltd. June 17, 1963 [July 17, 1962], No. 24031/63. Heading B3R. In welding opposed metal edges, the edges are advanced past and are brought together at a weld point, contacts are applied to metal adjacent the edges to supply current to heat the edges and the contacts are urged independently by hydraulic means into engagement with the metal. A tube blank 11 is fed past contact shoes 12 slidingly engaging the edges of a longitudinal gap in the blank and past rollers 15 where at a point 13 the edges are brought together for welding. The shoes 12 are mounted on movable current carrying members 26 secured to the piston rods of double acting hydraulic cylinders 21 mounted on fixed frame members 16 to which current supply leads are attached. The members 26 slide in current supply members 18, fixed to the members 16 and the current supply members 18, 26 are urged together by spring pressed bolts 30. The fixed member 18 are cooled by water supplied to conduits 37 and the movable members 26 are cooled by water supplied through flexible lines 42. The contact shoes 12 of silver-tungsten carbide alloy are secured to the members 26 by bolts 28 and may be rotated to provide new contact faces after wear and the shoes are cooled by air supplied through tubes 47. The tube surface may be air blasted prior to contacting the shoes by air supplied from slots 51 in the members 26. An electrically operated and hydraulically actuated control system is described whereby when the drive for feeding the tube is started the contact shoes are brought into contact with the tube and after a time delay which allows the tube to be accelerated to normal speed the power is supplied to the welder. The contact shoes are constantly and independently urged into contact with the tube during operation.
