A content access device and system may allow portable remote devices to be paired with a variety of different devices, allowing remote control through a network connection. Content access devices may expose application program interfaces, allowing incoming network traffic to control operation of the device much in the same way that a local infrared remote would. Routing content commands through an external application server may also yield other benefits, such as allowing more customized selection of information and advertising content to users based on their viewing history.
Abstract:
A remote control extension system for controlling appliances (60,70,80). A remote control (20) is connected by means of a network (30) to an extender device (40). The remote control (20) transmits messages (110,120) to the extender (40) during the period, that a command (14) is to be transmitted from the extender to an appliance. The command is for example a command having a variable duration, such as Volume UP. The extender (40) receives the messages. It transmits the command as long as it receives the messages from the remote control. It finishes the transmission of the command, if an expected message has not been received at a predetermined time. In this way, the duration of a command is limited in case of network disturbances.

A multivariate environmental sensing system with redundant transmission pathways with a network of nodes detecting environmental conditions and processing a transmissible signal. Nodes use predetermined criteria to make periodic detections, maintaining a low power state between detections. Power is conserved by deciding whether detections are transmitted immediately, or may be stored for periodic transmission. The nodes power up and immediately transmit urgent detections, storing routine detections for delayed batch transmission. Nodes may transmit signals received from other nodes, passing along signals received from more distant nodes. Transmission may have a predetermined pattern, but the system alters this pattern if there is disruption to the system or pattern. Gateways process data from nodes and pass data to other gateways, on an immediate or deferred basis, to a control center, where data is analyzed. Control centers transmit programming instruction to the gateways and nodes in a retrograde fashion along the transmission pathways.

The invention concerns a method of controlling an electronic device (5) using a wireless mobile device (1) having a display (3), and video capturing unit (4), the method comprising successive steps of: establishing a video call between said mobile device and a remote server (6) such that said remote server receives video images captured by said mobile device; performing image recognition to identify an electronic device in said captured video; detecting motion of said video capturing unit; and transmitting a control signal to said electronic device based on the motion of the video capturing unit.

Communication apparatuses based on a plurality of platforms, e.g. a push-button type telephone (13), a personal computer (14) and a portable telephone (15), are connected with a base station (12) over a public network (22) or the Internet (20), operation is guided from the base station (12) by means of voice guidance or Web page, and the base station (12) remote-controls an electric apparatus (11) in response to operation by a user of the communication apparatus (13-15). The guide program, voice guidance and Web page in the base station (12) can be updated through storage operation (24a, 27a, 27b, 27c) in the base station (12) and the function can be added or altered easily. Various platforms can be dealt with, various functions can be added and the operation menu can be updated easily.

The present invention relates generally to activate and deactivate other known systems, such as car brake system, electric and/or electronic system, fire alarm system, systems of safety and others, by a phone call originating from of any telephone type, conventional or cellular. The present invention shows a system 10 composed of a cellular phone 12 (figure merely illustrative), a source 13 of the cellular phone and of the activate/deactivate apparatus 14 elaborated according to the present invention. For user acquiring the system 10 in accordance with the invention is necessary to obtain a specific line of cellular phone, which user could choose, inclusive, in relation to the types actually available services in the market, such as a pre-paid system, a pos-paid system, a profile plane and others.
