Abstract:
A game controller of the type held in two hands simultaneously for controlling electronic games, including a housing, a plurality of depressible surfaces at least in-part exposed on the housing with the depressible surfaces in operational association with electricity manipulating devices contained within the housing and controlled by depression of the depressible surfaces for manipulating electrical outputs at least useful for controlling electronic games. At least one of the electricity manipulating devices is a pressure-sensitive variable-conductance sensor for creating an analog electrical output proportional to varying physical pressure applied to at least one depressible surface. Disclosed are controllers and methods of manufacture of controllers having at least one pressure-sensitive analog sensor of deformable material with an apex surface which variably flattens-out under variable pressure against at least one conductive trace surface to increase surface contact and vary conductivity.
Abstract:
An electronic equipment which provides an easier-to-use interface for the changing of the settings of various parameters on an LCD panel or the screen of a computer by the pushing by a user of a simple ON/OFF switch or holding it down, includes a switch connected to a pressure-sensitive unit, a processing circuit that performs processing depending on an output value of the switch, and a display unit that displays the results of processing of the processing circuit. The processing circuit changes the settings of parameters of electronic equipment in increments depending on the output value of the switch.
Abstract:
A positioning system for controlling the orientation of the movable elongated inner member relative to the fixed elongated outer member of a surgical instrument. An endoscopic rotatable shaver instrument incorporates a shaver blade assembly adapted to be received in and driven by a handpiece. The movable component of the shaver blade assembly is provided with a position indicator which is read by a sensor in the handpiece in order to control the position at which the inner member is stopped relative to the outer member. The invention is embodied in an apparatus and method enabling use of a shaver blade assembly as an aspirating device or as a probe without any aspirating function.
Abstract:
An adaptive keypad which has one or more keys includes, for each key, a pressure transducer positioned below a semi-rigid faceplate where the pressure transducer has a resistance which decreases as the pressure compressing the transducer increases. The transducer is connected in series with a capacitor to define an RC circuit for each key. Each RC circuit has a charge time proportional to the pressure applied to the key. A time capture circuit initially and thereafter intermittently, obtains the charge time for each RC circuit for each key and computes a conductance value from that time. The initial conductance value is stored in a memory. A comparing circuit intermittently compares the initial conductance value with each subsequent conductance value generated for a key. If the comparison value generated is greater than a predefined amount, a signal is generated indicating that a key has been depressed. If the comparison value is greater than a predefined amount over a selected period of time indicating a key is permanently depressed, the initial conductance stored in the memory for that key will be modified to a new value against which subsequent comparisons will be made to determine if a key is depressed.
Abstract:
The present invention includes a flexible, pressurizable keyboard made of resilient layers of plastic material, with molded keys which are deformable when pressed so as to send a signal to an electrical device. The keys are arranged with a flexible electrical circuit thereattached, which when depressed, establish a proper complete circuit.
Abstract:
A keyswitch-integrated pointing assembly in which a plurality of substantially planar force sensing elements are disposed on a planar surface adjacent a keyswitch on a keyboard. The keyswitch includes a plunger which extends downwardly from a key cap for actuating a switch at the lower end of vertical key cap travel. The key cap engages an indexing surface when fully depressed which transmits force applied to the key cap to the force sensing elements. The force sensing elements are sandwiched between a pair of opposing plates thereby biasing the elements into a substantially linear operating region when no force is applied to the key cap.
Abstract:
A push button switch which may be used, for example, as a zooming switch in a video camera, having a uniform electrical resistance/applied pressure characteristic and which can be manufactured easily and at a low cost. The switch includes a conductive layer and a pressure-sensitive resistance element disposed between electrode patterns provided on a printed circuit board and an insulated push button. The conductive layer is coated with a pressure-sensitive conductive paste and the pressure-sensitive resistance element is fixed to the insulated push button at a opposed surface to the electrode patterns separated by a predetermined distance.
Abstract:
A spacerless switch circuit for use in multiple switch keyboards includes a first base member having a front surface and a second base member having a front surface in touching relationship against the front surface of the first base member. A plurality of first and second conductor traces are respectively deposited on the front surfaces of the first and second base members. An insulative layer is deposited over regions of either or both of the first and second conductor traces to insulate the conductor traces from each other when the front surfaces of the two base members are touching one another. One or more first switch contacts are deposited on the first base member and one or more facing second switch contacts are deposited on the second base member to define one or more on/off switches. At least one of the first switch contacts includes a first conductive pad and a first pressure sensitive layer applied over the first conductor pad so that a surface junction is formed between the first and second switch contacts where the surface junction is electrically nonconductive when the first contact noncompressively touches the facing second contact and is electrically conductive when the first contact compressively touches the facing second contact.
