Abstract: The changer (106) has a hollow body portion with two ports which are in fluid communication with a cleaning fluid and a powder paint application device, respectively. Each change valve has an inlet and an outlet in communication with an interior cavity of the portion. Color valves corresponding to each purge valve has an outlet and inlet in communication with each inlet of purge valve and paint, respectively. Each change valve is operative in a mode to enable fluid communication between the inlet and outlet and operative in another mode to prohibit fluid communication between the inlet and outlet. The purge valves corresponding to each change valve has an outlet in communication with each inlet of change valve and has an inlet and a purge port. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating a powder paint applicator.

Abstract: A web making machine (108) is monitored to identify at least one cross-machi ne direction (CD) actuator (126) that is developing local mapping problems. The identified CD actuator and a segment of surrounding actuators are probed to determine a performance curve (227) for the actuator. The center of an insensitivity region of the performance curve is selected as an optimal mapping alignment setting for the identified actuator with the setting for t he actuator being updated. Global smoothing may also be accomplished by probing a global smoothness factor to generate a corresponding performance curve that is then similarly used to select an optimal value for the smoothness factor.

Abstract: A non-contact system for sensing a property of a passing web of material includes first and second sensors positioned on opposite sides of the web. The opposing sensors are repelled from the web and each other by gas bearings formed between the sensors and the web and attracted to each other by one or more polarized magnets embedded in the sensors. The resultant net force properly spaces the sensors from the web to ensure reliable and accurate sensing. The repelling force enables the sensors to react substantially instantaneously to changes in the pass line of the web. An automatic actuator/retractor can be provided to withdraw the sensors, extend the sensors to or retract the sensors from adjacent the feed path.

Abstract: An atomizing nozzle (22) for use with a rewet shower or a steam box. The measured pressures can be used to determine if either orifice (12, 14, 26) is completely blocked or if one orifice is partially blocked or the other orifice is worn.
