    Abstract: A frequency selective screen (18) is employed as a diplexer to separate each of one or more radio frequency signals into first and second bands of frequencies by allowing the first band of frequencies to pass therethrough and reflecting the second band of frequencies. The screen (18) includes an array of discrete, electrically conductive elements (32), preferably copper, formed on a substrate (33) such as a layer of polyimide. The conductive elements (32) possess a geometry which results in an equivalent electrical circuit (50) that exhibits parallel resonance, high impedance within the first band of frequencies and series resonance, low impedance within the second band of frequencies, thereby transmitting the signal in the first frequency band and reflecting the signal in the second frequency band. The screen (18) may include first and second portions (18a, 18b) in which the conductive elements (32) are respectively oriented along different axes to respectively separate horizontally and vertically polarized signals. The screen (18) may be employed in a satellite (10) to separate transmit and receive frequencies.

    Abstract: A spin-stabilized spacecraft has a pair of three-axis accelerometers (A, C) mounted on the spacecraft rotor (10) to provide for self-aligning, enduring and sophisticated navigational capability. A second pair of accelerometers (B, D) is added for redundancy and added sensitivity. Each pair of accelerometers are disposed at diametrically opposed positions on the rotor and respective axes are co-aligned. The orientation of spacecraft angular momentum h(Boolean not) is determined by star and planet sensors. Radial alignment of each accelerometer relative to the spacecraft angular momentum is attained by zeroing non-radial accelerometer readings during spacecraft quiescence. Axial alignment is attained during periods of substantially axial thrust by isolating axial translational acceleration by summing readings across an accelerometer pair to cancel rotational, spin-periodic contributions to the readings and time-averaging or otherwise filtering to cancel other non-axial periodic contributions to the readings. Axial alignment is automatically effected upon the correct alignment of the radial and tangential axes of each accelerometer.

    Abstract: Apparatus for measuring the numerical aperture of an optical fiber in the infrared region. The optical fiber (8) is appropriately mounted in accordance with conventional testing standards. Infrared energy is transmitted through the optical fiber (8). At a predetermined distance from the end of the optical fiber, a conversion screen (10) can be provided for transforming the emitted infrared energy into a lesser wavelength of energy. The energy distribution can be recorded with a detector compatible with the lesser wavelength energy whereby the numerical aperture can be computed from the recorded data.

    Abstract: A computer architecture for analyzing automatic image understanding problems. The architecture is designed so that it can efficiently perform a wide spectrum of tasks ranging from low level or iconic processing to high level or symbolic processing tasks. A first level (12) of image processing elements is provided for operating on the image matrix on a pixel per processing elements basis. A second level (14) of processing elements is provided for operating on a plurality of pixels associated with a given array of first level processing elements.     Abstract: A resonant quantum well laser (20) incorporates semiconductor barriers (26) on one or both sides of the quantum well (22) to increase the charge density within the quantum well. The composition of the injection layers (24) can be tailored in a manner that the energies of the charge carriers in the injection layers are about that of a resonant energy level for that type of charge carrier in the quantum well. The barrier layers (26) on one or both sides of the quantum well (22) enhance the probability of the charge carrier being in the well for a longer time and travelling a longer distance, increasing the chance of scattering. The charge carriers, electrons or holes, can move from their respective injection layers (24) into nearly identical energy levels within the quantum well (22), by tunneling through the thin barrier layers (26). The number of carriers which are available to transfer into the lasing energy level is increased, thereby increasing the efficiency of the laser and lowering its threshold current.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for precisely determining the relative velocity of an interferometer and a scene being scanned. The apparatus uses a matched filter technique in which reference signals based on high and low relative velocity estimates are correlated with an incoming interferometer signal and controllably adjusted until the correlation is maximized.     Abstract: An environmental chamber for providing thermal stress screening is comprised of a plurality of modular components which may be quickly assembled and disassembled for ease of maintenance and repair. In particular, a heater/cooling unit is coupled by means of a plurality of quick release lockable fasteners to a plenum module. The plenum module in turn is coupled by means of additional quick release lockable fasteners to a blower module. The plenum module in turn is comprised of a heater plenum which communicates with a blower plenum. Gas is drawn into the heater plenum and passed over heating coils which are disposed into the heating plenum from the heating/cooling module. The gas is then communicated to a blower plenum. Cryogenic nitrogen gas is constantly bled through a small (.015'') hole of the liquid nitrogen valve body and is selectively provided to the blower plenum from the heating/cooling module. The selectively heated or cooled gas is then expelled from the blower plenum by means of a blower which extends into the blower plenum from the blower module. Selective heated and cooled gas is directed to a part under test as selectively activated through proportional, integral and derivative control in response to the temperature requirements of the part under test and not in response to the gas delivered to the part or from the blower plenum.

    Abstract: Contamination, either in the form of particulate matter (46), e.g., dust and non-wetting liquid, or surface discontinuities (48), such as a smooth film or cratering, is collected on an exposed glass plate (12). Illumination at an angle incident with respect to a surface (14) of the glass plate causes the particulate matter to scatter light. A further light source illuminates the inside volume of the glass, causing light to scatter from the surface discontinuities. Either source of light scattering is detected by an optically sensitive detector (18) positioned beneath the glas plate. A bandpass filter (24) between the glas plate and the detector rejects spurious radiation.
