Abstract: According to the invention there is provided a liquid friction control composition characterized as either having a high and positive friction characteristic or a low and neutral friction characteristic, comprising a retentivity agent. The liquid friction control composition may also comprise other components such as a solid lubricant, a wetting agent, a consistency modifier, and a preservative. The liquid friction control compositions may be used to modify the interfacial friction characteristics in sliding and rolling-sliding contact such as steel wheel-rail systems including mass transit and freight systems.

Date Sep. 6, 1996In accordance with the method according to the invention, for the production of the plastics overlay, first of all a paste is made of a plastics dispersion and fillers. This paste is free of organic solvents and is applied to a sintered porous metal layer. The multilayer material thus produced is then sintered. Since the use of organic solvents is dispensed with, health risks and the risk of fire are reduced. Moreover, the composite materials produced according to the invention exhibit excellent cavitation resistance. In addition to conventional lubricant-free applications, such as bearings, these composite materials may consequently be used in particular in gear pumps and shock absorbers.

Abstract: Magnetorheological devices, including damping devices, rotary devices, and haptic systems constructed with said devices are disclosed. The devices contain dry magnetically-responsive particles, or MR fluids containing the magnetically responsive particles. Inthe formula, m is zero to about 1; D is a divalent metal; d is from zero to about 4; T is a trivalent metal; A is anions or negative-valence radicals of valence n; na is from zero to about -3; (m+d) is greater than zero; a is the number of A ions; q is from zero to about 6; and (m+2d+3+na) is equal to or greater than 3. The compounds are useful as gelling agents which impart beneficial thixotropic properties to various fluids, such as drilling fluids, especially when employed along with fluid loss agents.

a base oil of lubricating viscosity;
an amount of one or more zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate compound(s);
wherein the lubricating oil composition has one or both of the following ratios:
a) a ratio of KV40° C.fresh to a weight % of zinc contributed by the one or more zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate compound(s) based on a total weight of the lubricating oil composition, of greater than 510, wherein KV40° C.fresh is the kinematic viscosity of the fresh lubricating oil composition at 40° C.; and
b) a ratio of KV40° C.fresh to a weight % of phosphorus contributed by the one or more zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate compound(s) based on a total weight of the lubricating oil composition, of greater than 560, wherein KV40° C.fresh is the kinematic viscosity of the fresh lubricating oil composition at 40° C.
