Abstract:
Adducts of clay, especially of the smectite variety, most especially bentonite, are prepared with an effective amount of at least one activated mixed metal oxide or oxy-hydroxide (AHMMO) formed by dehydrating hydrotalcite or a mixture comprising magnesium oxide and aluminum oxide, or a crystalline mixed metal hydroxide conforming substantially to the formula LimDdT(OH)¿(m+2d+3+n.a)(A?n)a.xH2O where m is zero to one, D is a divalent metal, d is from zero to 4, T is a trivalent metal, A represents at least one anion or negative-valence radical of valence n, where n is 1 or more, (m+2d+3+n.a) is equal to or greater than 3, (m+d) is greater than zero, and xH2O represents excess waters of hydration. These adducts are useful, e.g., in drilling muds and in viscosity modification of a wide variety of fluids.

Disclosed are electro-rheological fluids including vermiculite treated with a quaternary ammonium salt, methods of making the same, propylene carbonate adsorbed on the solid phase, butyl benzoate added for the liquid phase, and methods of using the frequency response of electro-rheological fluids to vary apparent viscosity and to compensate for temperature changes in the fluids.
Abstract:
Abstract:
A grease composition for use as a cable filling material which contains about 75 to 95 parts by weight of a base component of a polyol or ester having a molecular weight of at least about 3000 and about 2 to 20 parts by weight of colloidal particles such as silica. Optionally, an antioxidant component can be added to impart high temperature resistance or a rubber component can be added to improve bleed resistance. Also, an article of manufacture of a cable having a sheath with one of the grease compositions of the invention located therein, and a method for filling the cable with such grease compositions.
Abstract:

Abstract:
A process for producing an organophilic clay comprises: (a) milling and refining a raw clay selected from the group of smectite clays in order to obtain a milled and refined clay; (b) replacing the exchangeable cations of the refined clay with sodium or ammonium cations, by means of a cation-exchange treatment; (c) contacting the cation-exchanged clay with a sulfonated condensed-ring polycyclic aromatic compound in order to obtain an organophilic clay; and (d) recovering the organophilic clay from the products obtained from the preceding (c) step. The so obtained organophilic clay is particularly useful as a thixotropic agent in organic vehicles, in particular in oil-base drilling muds.

The title lubricant composition comprises a base oil or base grease and a specified amount of a heat insulating agent comprising (A) an inorganic compound undergoing endothermic melting at temperatures of 1200° C or below and (B) an inorganic powder which neither melts nor decomposes at temperatures of 1200° C or below and which has a thermal conductiviry of 0.01 cal/cm.s. °C or less and a friction coefficient of 0.7 or less at room temperature added alone or as a combination. This lubricant composition has an excellent heat-insulating effect and is effective in preventing occurrence of thermal crown of working rolls.
