Abstract:
A high performance grease is provided that performs well at extremely cold temperatures and moderately elevated temperatures, as well as under normal operation conditions. The high performance grease comprises: a lithium soap thickener, a synthetic base oil blend of diester and polyalphaolefin, and extreme pressure antiwear additives and inhibitors comprising dithiocarbamates, phosphates, and hydroxides.
Abstract:
Substantially oil-free aqueous industrial fluids possess superior lubricating and wear preventing characteristics and are useful as hydraulic fluids and metalworking compositions. Fluids of the invention comprise (1) an aqueous liquid and (2) a water-soluble synthetic addition copolymer of (a) an ethylenically unsaturated crosslinking monomer, (b) an ethylenically unsaturated water-soluble monomer, and (c) an ethylenically unsaturated water-insoluble monomer. The industrial fluids exhibit good Newtonian behavior and mechanical stability at high shear.
Abstract:
In accordance with the instant invention, a water-based hydraulic fluid, having improved low foaming properties can be obtained by blending 2-ethylhexanol with a conventional water-based hydraulic fluid composition.
Abstract:
Polyolefin lubricant base oils can be surprisingly gelled by layer and chain type overtreated higher dialkyl dimethyl ammonium clays preferably containing a minimum of 12% excess of the quaternary ion moiety over their ion exchange capacity. For example, an overtreated dihydrogenated ditallow ammonium montmorillonite containing a 22% excess of the quaternary ion can be used to prepare a polydecene based grease although it does not gel mineral oil lubricants. In contrast, the known clay analog of equivalent treatment gels the mineral oil but not the synthetic polyolefin lubricant under comparable conditions.
Abstract:
Corrosion of metal workpieces by water-based synthetic metalworking fluids is inhibited by a small but effective amount of a corrosion inhibitor consisting essentially of a molybdate compound and a compound selected from the group consisting of nitrites, borates, alkanolamines, amine borates, amine salts of unsaturated fatty acids, alkanolamine sarcosinates, alkanolamine phosphates, and alkali, morpholine, and alkanolamine salts of arylsulfonamido carboxylic acids.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the use, as a hydraulic fluid or metalworking lubricant, of compositions having water as a base and yet possessing superior lubricating and wear preventing characteristics. The fluids of the invention comprise (1) a sulfurized molybdenum or antimony compound and (2) a phosphate ester or salt thereof. The compositions can be thickened, if desired, using for instance polyglycol, polyacrylic and polyvinyl alcohol-type thickeners. The use of corrosion inhibitors, metal deactivators and other adjuvants conventional in this art is also contemplated.
Abstract:
The invention provides a method for reducing the incidence of thermal decomposition products of metal-treating compositions on the surface of metal heat-treated in the presence of such compositions. The compositions are modified with certain acetylenic alcohols to improve their clean-burning characteristics; the resulting decrease in residual decomposition product on the metal surface facilitates subsequent processing.
Abstract:
Phosphoric acid esters of poly(2-10)ethyleneoxy n butane 1,4-diols are water soluble compounds which may be used in formulating light to heavy duty water-based metal working fluid compositions.
Abstract:
