Abstract: Release coating compositions for coating tapes and sheets (see Group VIII) comprise (1) a tough and fiexible film-former agent which is a synthetic or modified natural polymeric material and is self-adhesive to said tape or sheet, and (2) a monomeric waxy release agent which has a melting point above 200 DEG F. and is an N, N1-alkylene bis amide of a fatty acid or a hydrocarbon wax. Specified film-former agents are nitro-cellulose, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymers and vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers. Specified release agents are N, N1-methylene bis stearamide and N, N1-ethylene bis stearamide. The compositions may also comprise plasticizers, e.g. polyesters, tricresyl phosphate and dioctylphthalate, pigments and stabilizers, and may be applied from solutions or dispersions in volatile solvents, such as ketones, octane or xylene. Abstract: A copolymer of vinyl acetate and monooctadecyl maleate comprising 1.5 mols. vinyl acetate per mol. partial maleic ester is prepared by refluxing a mixture of the monomers in benzene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide. The copolymers are used as liners for pressure-sensitive adhesive surfaces and may be applied in aqueous dispersion or in solvents such as benzene, toluene, ethyl acetate and toluene/alcohol. Optional additions are starch, casein, polyvinyl acetate and lauric acid-modified glycol phthalate resin.

Any type of adhesive may be used, for example, that commonly used in the production of medical adhesive tape. The cellulose ester composition may contain cellulose acetate, a plasticizer, for example diethyl phthalate, triphenyl or tricresyl phosphate, or monochlor-naphthalene, and a solvent such as acetone and ethyl lactate, or acetone, a high boiling solvent, and a diluent. In place of cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate or cellulose butyrate may be used.
