Abstract: In one aspect the invention is a carrier-free pulverulent metalworking lubricant containing a resin having a highly polar functional group, and in another aspect is a method of the invention of forging a workpiece in a die which includes the step of applying to at least one of the die and the workpiece a coating of an effective amount of the carrier-free pulverulent lubricant composition. The use of the composition and method of the invention significantly reduces smoke and oily waste generation in hot forging operations by eliminating the use of oils or volatile organic compounds as carriers, while providing acceptable performance, cleanability, and sprayability.

Abstract: Surfaces which have substantially continuous frictional contact, eg. reciprocating engine parts, are coated with a solid film lubricant having excellent wear characteristics and adhesion. The parts in question may be pistons, and the area to which the wear resistant solid lubricant film is bonded is the piston skirt -- i.e., all or a portion of the area below the piston rings. The lubricant is composed of a polyimide derived from 2,2-bis[4-(4-amino- phenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane ("4-BDAF") and an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid (or dianhydride or ester thereof) containing fluorinated carbon.

Abstract: The invention relates to a thread compound, containing graphite, grease and usual additives, to a process for the preparation thereof and to the use of said compound. The thread compound according to the invention contains 20-50%, by weight, of powdered graphite, 10-25%, by weight, of powdered talc, and balance to 100%, by weight, of grease and the usual additives. The thread compounds according to the invention do not contain lead or lead compounds, but still have the above-mentioned desired properties. Preferred thread compounds of the invention comprise 28-35%, by weight, of the powdered graphite, 14-17.5%, by weight, of the powdered talc, and balance to 100%, by weight, of the grease and the usual additives. Surprisingly good results may be obtained when in the thread compound the amount of talc is about 50%, by weight, of the amount of the graphite.
