    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultra-high molecular weight suture having distinguishable ends, and having a reduced glare.SOLUTION: A colored suture (10) includes an elongate woven braid of filaments including one or two or more ends (26, 28) made of an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The suture also includes second and third ends which are colorable or dyeable before or after its incorporation into the elongate woven braid. This invention provides surgeons with improved recognition of suture ends in surgery by construction of a bi-colored or co-braided woven braid with at least two ends of mutually different color schemes or patterns braided into a UHMWPE construction. One of the colored ends runs continuously from one end of the suture to the other end. The other colored end is preferably colored only on one half of the end. This provides a suture with two distinguishable ends, while still maintaining a continuous line of color along the length of the suture.

    Abstract: A hoisting member for an elevator system includes a core having strength components embedded in a matrix material. A coating can surround the core to protect the core and control the coefficient of friction of the outer surface based on a range of desired friction properties to prevent or inhibit slippage of the hoisting member when used in a traction elevator system. The strength components may be made from carbon nanotube material with the matrix material made from a polymer material. The hoisting member may also include other conductive material or fiber optic material. The hoisting member may also serve as the trailing cable in an elevator system. In doing so the hosting member transmits power and data between the elevator car and the elevator controller thereby eliminating the need for a traditional trailing cable.
