Abstract:
A targeted integrated image is created for delivery to a user. Content of potential interest to the user is determined based on at least one user preference. This determination may be made prior to or during the user's request for an image, such as video content, or while the user is receiving an image, such as a menu or programming guide. An image representing the content of potential interest to the user, such as a barker is selected and combined with another image of interest to the user to form a targeted integrated image for delivery to the user. The user preference may include information representing content viewing habits or content ordering habits of the user. The user preferences may be associated with the identity of the user.
Abstract:
Abstract:
A system and method is provided for permitting a data terminal to connect to a broadcast station web site and to receive a broadcast station broadcast in response to selection of a bookmark. Selection of the bookmark results in a tuner on the data terminal being tuned to receive a broadcast while the data terminal substantially simultaneously connects to a web site for the broadcast station. Broadcast frequency information and web site address information for the bookmark may be stored on the data terminal, or such information may be stored remotely, such as on a station id server in communication with the data terminal. The bookmark may be programmed by the user and may represent different broadcast stations according to parameters.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of broadcasting a message having a text portion to be communicated to a user, the method comprising broadcasting the message in the form of an entitlement management message for reception by the user.
Abstract:
An information system for efficiently providing information separately to terminals. An information providing system for providing a content created for an individual terminal (4) by a content provider (1) to the terminal (4) comprises a broadcasting station (3) for broadcasting a content in a data broadcast and a content transmission coordinator (2) for requesting the broadcasting station to send the content created by the content provider, acquiring the information necessary to receive the content from the broadcasting station, and presenting the information through a communication line to the terminal. In such a way, a content is transmitted from a broadcasting system to a terminal, and information necessary for the broadcasting system to receive the content is transmitted to the terminal through a communication system, thereby enabling efficient information provision.
Abstract:
A method of receiving messages with a receiver in a motor vehicle is proposed, wherein the receipt of the message interrupts the audio output by the appliance, and the receipt must be confirmed by the user. For this purpose, the appliance according to the invention has means for interrupting the audio output, and for acknowledging the message.
Abstract:
A communication system having programmable, addressable receivers that receive, store, process, and send digital and conventional video, audio and control signals for use in, among other things, a cable video network (9). Conventional audio and composite video and digital data signals are assembled into a single transmission by an automated production system. The transmission is delivered to the addressable receivers where the audio and video signals and some portion of the data may be selected and processed for re-transmission (114, 116, 118, 120, 98). The receivers may be addressed individually, in units or in groups for the purpose of receiving information on the basis of one or more pre-selected criteria.
Abstract:
A data communication system transmits a data signal that includes data that may be grouped into one or more packets. The packets may be further grouped into sessions where a session identifier for the session corresponds to the data contained in the session and a receiver can use the session identifier to decide to ignore the corresponding data. The system may include a provision for checking and correcting errors in digital data by partitioning the data into original data portions, applying an error-correction algorithm to provide error-corrected portions corresponding to the original data portions, and rearranging and concatenating the error-corrected portions to provide a string of bits. The communication protocols of the transmitter and receivers may be automatically and dynamically set by constructing a packet of data containing communication protocol parameters, transmitting the packet of data to the receivers, and adjusting communication protocol attributes according to the communication protocol parameters contained in the packet. Each of the receivers may include a board ID which, once assigned, cannot be ascertained and which allows selection of a subset of the receivers to receive the data. The data signal can be transmitted by being superimposed onto a conventional video signal, such as an NTSC video signal.
Abstract:
An Operations Center (202) for television entertainment systems that provide television programming to consumer homes is disclosed. The Operations Center (202) organizes and packages television programming and program information for delivery to and from consumer homes. The Operations Center (202) includes a computerized packaging system (260) for creating a program control information signal.
Abstract:
Several cable headend (34) configurations that utilize digital technology are disclosed. The present invention provides greater capability and flexibility than existing cable headends (34). Specifically, a modular design for a cable headend (34) and a combiner (104) component for cable headends (34) are disclosed. The invention is particularly useful in cable television program delivery systems transponding large numbers of digitally compressed program signals. The combiner (104) disclosed allows cherry-picking of programs from transponded signals.
