    Abstract: Apparatus for laying a pipeline of large diameter on a deep sea-bed without kinking or excessive bending includes a floating vessel having a discharge track sloping downwardly toward the stern to support the outer end of a pipeline for sliding movement and mechanism for imparting tension to a pipeline is mounted on the discharge track. A stinger, adapted to slidingly support a pipeline as it is being laid, is pivotably connected to the discharge end of the track and is formed from articulated ramp segments, each buoyantly supported independently of the others so that its depth in the water may be regulated, whereby the stinger may be caused to extend downwardly from the stern of the vessel along a predetermined slope.

    Abstract: A pipeline closing head, for use in testing a pipeline after it has been laid on a submerged bed by subjecting the pipeline temporarily to internal pressure through the use of filling and emptying balls, is constituted by a hollow cylindrical body having a crowned closing element at one end and containing, at its other end, an air tight chamber housing the filling and emptying balls. Ducts and control valves through which fluid is supplied to said chamber to activate the filling and emptying balls and supply fluid pressure to the interior of the pipeline are housed within the cylindrical body so that they do not overhang the closing head, which may slide along a conventional ramp for the pipeline.

    Abstract: A drilling ship is maintained over a deep sea well in a drilling position defined by an inner circle and an outer circle having the well as their center. The ship is connected to a set of anchors fastened to the sea bed and adapted, when the ship is subjected to the action of external forces tending to change its position and of not more than a predetermined magnitude, to restrain the ship from moving beyond the confines of the inner circle. The ship is equipped with a set of adjustable propellers adapted, in conjunction with the anchors, to position the ship within the confines of the outer circle when the external forces acting on the ship to change its position exceed the predetermined magnitude. The operation of the propellers is controlled by a computer to which values are fed which are determined by detectors of the position of the ship and of external forces acting upon it.

    Abstract: A process and apparatus for installing the enbloc superstructure of an offshore platform on the fixed legs emerging from water of the lower structure or jacket including loading the whole superstructure on a vertically movable support platform provided on the deck of a semisubmersible raft or barge, completely submerging the raft in the vicinity of the jacket, the stability being maintained by vertical buoyancy tanks on the raft deck, and lifting the support platform and the superstructure by activating related hydraulic lift cylinders, to a height higher than that of the protruding ends of the jacket leg, independently from wave-motion of sea. Subsequently, cylindrical lift pillars slide, by means of hydropneumatic jacks, within tubular columns provided in the superstructure until the conical ends of the pillars enter corresponding seats in the jacket legs and, during a moment of smooth sea, the superstructure is lifted to the desired height using the hydropneumatic jacks, while at the same time, the support platform is rapidly lowered, and the raft is ballasted.

    Abstract: This invention relates to an improved method for rapidly laying a pipeline in deep water by an anchored floating means. The rapid laying is obtained by varying the forces exerted by winches mounted on the floating means in such a manner as to impart a rapid movement to the floating means, in the longitudinal direction of laying, for a distance equal to the length of the piece of pipe added to the free end of the pipeline to be laid. Before termination of the rapid movement there is applied to the floating means a compensating force, whose direction, sense and intensity are such that, together with the forces exerted by the winches, said compensating force opposes moment by moment the central elastic force which induces a damped oscillatory motion in the floating means. This oscillation is thus eliminated or drastically and rapidly dampened.
