    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a golf shoe outsole having a greater degree of flexibility and traction with turf, and therefore greater stability and balance to the user.SOLUTION: The golf shoe outsole comprises a generally flexible forward section 32 and a generally hard heel section, each section having a plurality of pod sections 31a-31h molded thereupon, each having at least one cleat attached thereto. Each pod section has an outer edge or perimeter that is flared quite significantly. The outsole has a 0.375 width to length ratio at the metatarsal area of the outsole and a pod vertical height of at least 9.1 mm and a flare angle of at least 52° from vertical on the outer edges of the pod sections. The pod sections have a minimum Shore A hardness of 95 and extend a minimum of 6.3 mm from the bottom surface of the outsole. The forward portion of the outsole is made from a relatively flexible thermoplastic polyurethane having a hardness between 75 to 85 Shore A.

    Abstract: A golf club head having portions of varying density is disclosed and claimed. The club head includes a body with a recess in the back between the heel and toe and extending toward the sole. An insert that is configured to matingly correspond to the recess is positioned within the recess. The insert has a lower specific gravity than the club head body, biasing the club head mass toward the club head perimeter. The insert can form a muscle of the club head. The club head is forged, and the recess is formed by machining. After the insert is positioned within the recess, the club head-insert combination is subjected to additional forging and finishing steps. The present invention increases the club head moment of inertia and/or enlarges the club head sweet spot while retaining the golfer's ability to work the golf ball and shape the golf shot. The present invention can be used with forged, blade, and muscle back clubs, which have not heretofore been enhanced in these manners.
