    Abstract: A method of making a polypropylene product for use in making films and preferably biaxially oriented films and more preferably biaxially oriented films wherein a tenter-frame processing line is employed. The method includes the addition of low concentrations of a nucleating system in a mini-random polypropylene that allows for better processability and improved tensile properties. In one embodiment the nucleating system comprises a blend of a monocarboxylic acid nucleating agent and dicarboxylic acid nucleating agent. The nucleating system is combined with the polypropylene material and the resultant hot melt blend is further processed into biaxially oriented film. Alternately, the hot melt blend is formed into a convenient raw material for later use in a biaxial oriented film production facility. The resulting films possess superior processing and material characteristics.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a phthalate-free plasticizer for polymer resins. The phthalate-free plasticizer according to the invention includes a mixture of different triesters of glycerin, at least one of which meets the formula: CH2(OOR1)CH(OOR2)CH2(OOR3) wherein at least two of R1, R2, and R3 are different alkyl or aryl groups. Phthalate-free plasticizers according to the invention can be made by esterifying glycerin with a mixture of acids in the presence of a catalyst. Preferably, the mixture of acids includes at least two selected from the group consisting of alkyl acids and aryl acids, with each acid in the mixture containing up to about 11 carbon atoms, and more preferably from about 4 to about 9 carbon atoms each. The plasticizer according to the invention can be used to modify the properties of a wide variety of polymers including vinyl polymers, rubbers, polyurethanes, and acrylics, and has superb thermostability and low volatility.

    Abstract: A curable composition comprising (A) an organopolysiloxane having functional groups capable of condensation reaction at both molecular terminals thereof and (B-1) a hydrophobic silica and a hydrophilic silica. The curable composition enables shortening the operating period for coating, and a coating film of uniform thickness can be obtained by the application thereof. The obtained coating film is excellent in film strength and film hardness and, when used for antifouling purposes, exerts excellent antifouling capability for a prolonged period of time. Further, the curable composition ensures excellent storage stability before application thereof.

    Abstract: According to one embodiment, a container comprises a base. The base has a bottom wall and a continuous base wall which encompasses the bottom wall and extends upwardly therefrom. The base is made from a mixture of a polyolefin and a filler. The mixture is from about 30 to about 75 wt. % filler and from about 25 to about 70 wt. % polyolefin. A high aspect ratio filler and a low aspect ratio filler are included in the filler, with the high aspect ratio filler having an aspect ratio of at least 5:1 and the low aspect ratio filler having an aspect ratio of less than about 3:1. The filler comprises at least 50 wt. % of low aspect ratio filler.

    Abstract: A low rolling resistance tire (1) for vehicles is described which comprises a belt structure (12) coaxially extending around a carcass structure (2) and a tread (9), coaxially extending around the belt structure (12) and being externally provided with a rolling surface (9a) designed to get in touch with the ground, the tread (9) comprising a vulcanized polymer base including at least a first silica-based reinforcing filler, the tire being characterized in that the first silica-based reinforcing filler has: an average projected area of the aggregates as measured before incorporation into the polymer base lower than 20,000 nm2; a dispersion index in the vulcanized polymer base of the tread (9) not lower than 97%; and a projected area of the aggregates after incorporation into the polymer base comprised between 8500 and 18000 nm2. Advantageously, said tire has mechanical properties improved or at least comparable with respect to those of the known tires for the same type of use.
