Abstract:
Described are methods that utilize high efficiency evaporative distillation to make a high softening point coal tar pitch, a quinoline insoluble-free and ash-free coal tar pitch having a desired softening point, and a mesophase coal tar pitch. Each of the methods uses a feed coal tar pitch having a softening point in the range of 70° C. to 160° C. The methods may be carried out using appropriate conventional distillation equipment, a wiped film evaporator, or a thin film evaporator.
Abstract:
Polymeric composites and methods of manufacturing polymeric composites are described. In one embodiment, a set of microcapsules containing a phase change material are mixed with a dispersing polymeric material to form a first blend. The dispersing polymeric material has a latent heat of at least 40 J/g and a transition temperature in the range of 0° C. to 50° C. The first blend is processed to form a polymeric composite. The polymeric composite can be formed in a variety of shapes, such as pellets, fibers, flakes, sheets, films, rods, and so forth. The polymeric composite can be used as is or incorporated in various articles where a thermal regulating property is desired.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses a method for dispersing and exfoliating fillers in a thermoplastic polymer by sonicating a mixture of the thermoplastic polymer and the filler. The method of the present invention is particularly useful in dispersing layered silicate clays in thermoplastic polymers. A reinforced composite comprising a filler dispersed in a thermoplastic polymer is also disclosed. In another variation, the method of the invention is incorporated into conventional plastic extruder and injection molding equipment.
Abstract:
A continuous process for the preparation of a thermoplastic molding composition is disclosed. Accordingly a first stream containing a molten polymer and at least one additive is introduced into a second extruded stream that contains a molten polymer to produce a combined stream. The temperature of the first stream that is below that of the second stream. The additive is in either liquid form, in solution or in dispersion.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of producing molded articles of at least one thermoplastic natural polymer and one small particle comprised natural filler. The melted thermoplastic natural polymer is mixed with the small particle comprised filler to a pasty material mixture and shaped into the molded article. According to the invention it is intended that the small particle comprised natural filler is impregnated and/or wetted with an additive prior to the production of the pasty material mixture.
Abstract:
A thermoplastic resin product having a skin film, such as a bumper of automobile can be used to produce reclaimed resin particles utilizable in various uses, without removing the skin film, by mixing a pulverized thermoplastic resin product containing a small amount of cured resin particles and a black or colored pigment with one or more of a light-shielding pigment such as a white pigment, a black pigment, and a colored pigment, converting the mixture into a molten product, and converting the molten product into solid particles.
Abstract:
A pulverized thermoplastic resin product such as a pulverized thermoplastic product containing a black pigment, a mixture of a pulverized thermoplastic product containing a colored pigment and a pulverized thermoplastic product containing a colored pigment, or a pulverized thermoplastic product containing two or more different colored pigments can be converted into colored reclaimed resin particles by a method comprising the steps of mixing the pulverized resin product with a white pigment and a black pigment, melting the resulting mixture, and converting the molten mixture into solid particles. The colored reclaimed resin products can be utilized in various field.
Abstract:
A highly filled composite is formed by extruding through a multiple screw extruder a thermoplastic resin and sufficient filler so that an autogranulating extrudate exits the extruder barrel. The extruder is operated without an exit manifold, strand die or breaker plate. The extrudate forms irregularly shaped granules. The granules provide a molding composition that can be used to form highly filled molded articles such as fuel cell separator plates and end plates by compression, injection or compression-injection molding.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to non-foamed insect repellent concentrates that include polymeric resins that have been impregnated with insect repellents and methods for making same. Additionally, the present invention relates to products formed from insect repellent impregnated polymeric resins and methods for making same. Preferred products such as, for example, plastic tablecloths, plastic garbage receptacles and plastic garbage lawn bags are described.
