Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for auto-titrating a surgical laser. SOLUTION: The method for auto-titrating a surgical laser comprises: providing an algorithm, wherein the algorithm is operable to configure the laser based on user inputs; providing a first user input operable to cause the algorithm to execute and fire the laser in a defined pattern; providing a second user input, in response to an observed condition, operable to cause the laser to stop firing and to cause the algorithm to determine laser parameter values and configure the laser based on the laser parameter values, wherein the algorithm determines the laser parameters based on the final laser power value when the laser stops firing. The method can further comprise placing the laser in a "ready" (surgical) mode, either automatically by the auto-titration algorithm or via another user input. A user can perform a surgical procedure with the automatically configured laser. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser surgery unit which can perform a series of advanced functions by performing a series of basic functions and being remote-controlled. SOLUTION: In an embodiment of this invention, a laser surgery system with a series of basic functions can perform a series of advanced functions by remote control. In one embodiment of this invention, a basic laser surgery system is connected to an advanced control unit. This makes the advanced control unit control the basic laser surgery system, so that a series of more functions can be performed. A rarely used function is shifted to the advanced unit. Thus, the basic unit is rationalized in terms of both cost and size, the amount of learning required for the use of the basic unit becomes smaller than that of learning required for the use of a unit equipped with more functions, and the basic unit can be used in an infinite number of procedures or situations in which "integrated" unit is not desired. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive cassette clamp having a mechanism section controlled smoothly. SOLUTION: An apparatus has a pair of turning cassette clamp bars. The clamp bars are connected to a pneumatic cylinder or an electric machine actuator via a series of links and an actuator wheel. The pneumatic cylinder or electric machine actuator extends or contracts, thereby forward rotating or counter rotating the clamp bars. By using the pneumatic cylinder, a smoothly and appropriately controlled mechanism section of the clamp bars is provided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ophthalmic lens which has ability to completely or partially correct natural chromatic aberrations of eyes. SOLUTION: In one aspect, the intraocular lens including a posterior optical element 12 and an anterior optical element 14 is provided. The posterior optical element 12 and the anterior optical element 14 have different chromatic dispersions adapted to cooperatively provide compensation for natural chromatic aberrations of the eye over a wavelength range of interest, for example over a wavelength range of 400 to 700 nm. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phacoemulsification tip having a shaft with a distal end that is offset relative to the center line of the shaft when observed from above or below. SOLUTION: The tip 400 contains the shaft 412 having an opening 419 that is cut at an angle relative to the longitudinal center line 415 forming the oval or elliptical opening 419. The shaft 412 contains the distal end 413 that is offset relative to the center line 415 of the shaft 412 when observed from above or below so that the distal tip 413 lies on a line 417 that runs through a major diameter M of the opening 419 and is offset from, but is parallel to, the center line 415. A construction which produces a shipping motion when the tip 400 is vibrated in the longitudinal direction is formed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for allowing a user to select release modality for a surgical cassette as embodiments of this invention. SOLUTION: Example release modes can include an instant or latching mode, a continuous mode or a delay mode. An embodiment of the present invention can include providing a user interface that allows a user to select a cassette release mode for a surgical cassette from a set of cassette release modes, determining that a release request is asserted, and releasing the surgical cassette from surgical instrumentation according to the selected cassette release mode. According to one embodiment, the release modes for the cassette can include an instant mode, a continuous mode and a delay mode. The user can also select, for example, whether the release command can be asserted through a button, user interface or both. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an acoustic fluid level sensor for use in a chamber incorporated in a surgical cassette. SOLUTION: The sensor has an ultrasonic transducer attached outside of a lower part of a fluid chamber and is acoustically coupled with the chamber. The transducer transmits ultrasonic signal pulses via the chamber and a liquid in the chamber. The signal is reflected on an interface between the air and the liquid and is received by the transducer. Time required since the signal is transmitted from the transducer until received by the transducer varies, depending on the quantity of the fluid in the chamber and indicates the fluid level in the chamber. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical apparatus relating to cataract surgery and more particularly to manipulation tools and irrigation sleeves used in phacoemulsification surgery to reduce or prevent the flow of irrigation fluid out of the irrigation sleeve from around the shaft. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes irrigation sleeve 101 containing outflow holes 117 and a distal opening 130, the distal opening can be formed in the apparatus 100 previously, and tightly fits about the shaft 12 of the apparatus 100. Such a tight fit reduces or prevents the flow of irrigation fluid out of the apparatus 100 around the shaft 12. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for increasing outflow of aqueous humor from the eye through a trabecular meshwork. SOLUTION: The technique is provided by using a fluid pulse which can be focused, thereby perforating a trabecular meshwork, or applied over a larger area so as to stimulate the trabecular meshwork for improved fluid transport. The irrigating fluid pulse can be used to clean away a material such as iris pigment that may be blocking or clogging the trabecular meshwork. Such a technique may be practiced by using the herein disclosed tip with a commercially available surgical handpiece. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a formulation for lowering IOP (intraocular pressure) and/or offering nerve protection for optic papilla and/or omentum ganglion cell via a pathogenic route. SOLUTION: The formulation lowers intraocular pressure of a patient who needs lowering intraocular pressure and nerve protection, to provide the patient with nerve protection. The formulation contains at least one nonnucleotide agent or nonprotein agent of an effective amount for curing that serves to inhibit expression, signaling and biological function of a connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The formulation is prescribed for administration. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
