    Abstract: A noise canceling method and apparatus for canceling noise by time domain processing sub-bands of a digital input signal. The input signal (102) is divided into a number of frequency-limited time-domain sub-bands (104). Each sub-band is then individually processed in a band splitter (106) to cancel noise present in the signal. The noise processing includes exponential averaging of the input, noise estimation, and subtraction processing. The noise subtraction process is simplified by generating a filter coefficient that is exponentially smoothed, hard limited, and multiplied with the input signal to generate the noise processed output for each sub-band. The noise processed bands are then recombined in a recombiner (108) into a digital output signal (110). Implementation may be effected in software or hardware and applied to various noise canceling and signal processing application.

    Abstract: A system for cancelling and reducing an audio signal noise arising from electrical or electromagnetic noise sources such as AC to DC power converter used by computers. The system receives a digital audio signal (102) sampled at a frequency which is at least twice the bandwidth of the audio signal. The input samples are stored in a temporary buffer of 256 points (104). when the buffer is full, the new 256 points are combined in a combiner (106) with the previous 256 points to provide 512 input points which are multiplied by multiplier (108) with a shading window with the length of 512 points. The shaded results are converted to the frequency domain through an FFT processor (110). The FFT output is processed in a noise processor (112) which includes the noise magnitude estimation for each frequency bin, the substraction that estimates the noise free complex value for each frequency bin and the residual noise reduction process.

    Abstract: A self-supporting headset (10) worn on the ear of a user without a headband (30) or placed in a stand (10 or 40) as a desktop microphone system by a switch-function (100) installed in the headset (10). The headset (10) includes a housing (20) which accommodates a receiver means (21), an arcuate earband (30) connected by a spring (90) to the housing (20) and a pivotally connected boom microphone (50) which extends from the housing (20) to near the lips of a user. The arcuate housing (30) is placed over the entire outer ear to transmit audio signals without any need for an ear tube. An earband member (40) can have a female member (15) on the bottom surface so as to connect a member to mate with a male member (15) located on the stand (10 or 40). The headset (10) can be equipped with noise cancellation technology to remove background noise for optional use on with telephones, computers, or any of the like.

    Abstract: A cellular telephone (8) for reducing background noise includes a housing having a receiver portion and a speaker portion.
