Abstract: 1,168,467. Making composite wire; drawing. TREFILERIES LEON BEKAERT P.V.B.A. 22 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 57480/66. Headings B3A and B3P. A method of applying a non-ferrous metal overlay to a steel or steel alloy wire comprises the steps of assembling a loose-fitting sleeve of the overlay metal to the wire, cold-drawing the assembly through a first die which reduces the diameter of the sleeve, so that it is a close-fit on the wire, through a stabilizing die, the length of which is at least ten times greater than its bore diameter and which prevents the sleeve being stripped off the wire when it passed through a final die which simultaneously reduces both the sleeve and the wire to form a molecular bond between them. In an apparatus for carrying out the method the wire (or rod) 11 and the sleeve 14 are passed through first and second dies 15 and 16 and forwarded by feed rollers 17 and 18 to a stabilizing die 21. This die is of considerable length in relation to its diameter and in an example has a bore of 5À6 mm. and a length of 70 mm. In this example a lead sheath is applied to a steel core. The assembly is drawn through the final die 22 by the rollers 23 and 24 in which a reduction of each of the components of the assembly occurs, the reductions being in proportion to their individual hardnesses.

A vehicle comprises a fluid operated power steering system and an anti-roll device as specified in Specification 1,157,016, in which the action of the time delay piston 19 is inhibited during cornering in response to a pressure differential in the steering circuit. In one of the lines 43a serving the hydraulic steering ram 44 is incorporated a member 42 having spring controlled one-way valves 47 and 48 which produce a pressure differential, according to the direction of flow, in lines 45 and 46. These act, in conjunction with springs 55 and 56, upon pistons 49 and 50 which act upon a piston 51 in a closed hydraulic circuit with the damping piston 19 so as to oppose its damping effect. In a modification, Fig. 2, the pistons 49 1 and 50 1 are acted upon through orifices 64 and 65 in washers 62 and 63.

In a process of coating a metal substrate such as steel, with aluminium e. g. by hot dipping the substrate is first coated with a flux comprising at least one alkali or alkaline earth metal ferri or ferrofluoride. The flux is preferably one or more of K 3 FeF 6 , K 2 FeF 4 and K 3 Fe 2 F 7 and may be applied molten or as an aqueous suspension or solution. The flux coating is applied by dipping, electrolysis, electro-phoresis or vaporization. The flux solution may also contain HF and the example relates to the coating of steel wire.
