Abstract: This invention relates to a microprocessor-based medical pump (10) with a number of manual controls. The operation of this pump requires the attachment of a magnetic label (30) to the front of the pump. This magnetic label includes a given number of strong permanent magnets in a pre-determined configuration which indicate the pharmaceutical product type and concentration to be infused. The magnetic label also changes the visual scales around the manual controls. Hall Effect sensors read the pre-determined configuration and send the data to the microprocessor which also reads the manual controls. Using the pre-determined configuration data and the manual control data, the microprocessor determines the desired infusion parameters.

Abstract: A urine discharge measuring system for medical use which includes a gimbal mounted frame supporting a urine container of fixed dimensions to collect urine from a urinary catheter attached to a patient. An ultrasonic transceiver mounted above the container and operated in conjunction with a microprocessor based control unit, positioned adjacent to the transceiver, periodically and automatically measures the height of the urine collected within the container. The measured fluid height is converted to fluid volume by the control unit. To maintain the sterility of the container, the transceiver transducer(s) is mechanically isolated from the urine container by elements which allow the ultrasonic energy to be transmitted to and received from the interior of the container. In one described embodiment, desired measured volume accuracy is achieved by employing a reflective target within the urine container at a known fixed distance from the transceiver transducer. Comparison by the control unit of the measured distance with the actual distance to the target allows generation of corrections for variations of the speed of sound in air due to temperature and humidity to be applied when obtaining the urine height within the container. Digital displays in the control unit provide indication of past and present accumulation of the urinary output of the patient.

Abstract: In a urinary drainage bag (10), a coupler for the outlet tube including a connector (16) mounted on the discharge end of the outlet tube (12) and defining a rigid extension thereof receivable within a bag-mounted housing. The connector (16) includes spring arms (22) having locking fingers (36) releasably engagable behind a housing shoulder (44) upon a seating of the connector body within the housing. The fingers (36) are selectively released through a manual manipulation of the connector arms which provide for a positive handhold on the connector (16) as the outlet tube (12) is released.

Abstract: A guide wire is provided to guide a very small diameter catheter, such as a coronary dilatation catheter used in coronary angioplasty techniques. The guide wire itself is of very small diameter, (under 0.020'') yet is steerable and may be visualized fluoroscopically. The major portion of the guide wire is a small diameter flexible rod. The distal region of the rod is tapered. The tapered portion is surrounded by a helically wound spring which is brazed at its proximal and distal ends, to the base and tip, respectively, of the tapered region of the rod. A shorter segment of the spring extends beyond the distal end of the rod and serves as a highly flexible bumper to assure that the distal tip of the guide wire will not cause traumatic injury to the blood vessel. The distal region of the guide can be bent manually by the surgeon to a curved shape which it will tend to assume when relaxed. The distal region is flexible and can bend from the set curve to follow the contour of the blood vessel. The distal end of the wire can be steered by manipulation and rotation of the proximal end of the guide. At least the spring portion of the guide wire is formed from a material having a high degree of radiopacity to facilitate its fluoroscopic observation. Also disclosed is a combination of such a spring guide with a coronary dilatation catheter.

Abstract: A steerable guidewire for guiding a catheter includes an elongate hollow shaft (20) having a distal core wire (32) mounted at its distal end. The distal core wire (32) tapers in a distal direction and has a flexible distal tip (40). The core wire (32) is received within a helical coil (24) mounted to the distal end of the guidewire, the distal tip (40) of the core wire (32) being attached to the distal tip (36) of the helical coil (24). A pull wire (44) extends the length of the guidewire through the hollow shaft (20) and the helical coil (24) and is connected, eccentrically, to the distal tip (36) of the helical coil (24) by a small diameter internal spring (50), the proximal end of which is attached to the distal end (52) of the pull wire (44) and the distal end of which is attached to the distal end (36) of the helical coil (24). Pulling on the pull wire (44) causes the distal tip of the guidewire to assume a curved configuration. The resilience of the internal spring (50), however, permits the distal tip of the guidewire to assume a more straightened configuration even while the pull wire (44) is tensioned whereby the distal tip of the guidewire may yield to conform to irregularities in a patient's vasculature.
