Abstract: Benzoic acid is prepared by oxidizing toluene by means of dilute nitric acid at an elevated temperature, the layers of acid and toluene being allowed to remain in contact without agitation for several days. Acid of 36-43 per cent strength is preferred; the reaction may be started by adding a reducing agent, such as formaldehyde solution, paraformaldehyde, or copper, zinc, starch, &c., which causes the evolution of nitrogen oxides. The nitrogen oxides evolved in the process are oxidized by the air present and then condensed along with the other vapours and returned to the reaction. If necessary, air may be forced into the apparatus to assist in the oxidation of the nitrous fumes. The used acid may be mixed with fresh acid for treatment of another batch. The benzoic acid obtained is purified by conversion into its sodium or calcium salt, any contaminating nitro body being eliminated by treatment with a reducing agent and removal of the amino compound produced. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the process is applicable to the production of acids by the oxidation of the side-chains of aromatic compounds in general, for example, the oxidation of ethylbenzene to benzoic acid, of o-nitrotoluene to o-nitrobenzoic acid, of xylenes to toluic and phthalic acids, and of o-cresol esters to salicylic acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.

Abstract: 128,578. Commercial Research Co., (Assignees of Brooks, B. T.). June 20, 1918, [Convention date]. Hypochlorous acid; hypobromous acid.-Chlorhydrins and bromhydrins are prepared by subjecting gaseous olefinic hydrocarbons, under pressure, to the action of a weak aqueous solution of hypochlorous or hypobromous acid. The reaction is effected in a vessel A filled with an inert packing. In making chlorhydrins, hydrocarbon gases are pumped through an inlet D and excess escapes through a valve f and meter G. Hypochlorous acid solution is sprayed into the vessel A from a pipe H by a pump I. The chlorhydrin solution is discharged by a pipe B to a storage vessel C from which it may be passed through an apparatus in which hypochlorous acid is formed and thence is returned to the vessel A to obtain a stronger solution of chlorhydrins. The hypochlorous acid is formed by passing water or chlorhydrin solution from the vessel C into a mixing- vessel 0 containing a salt of a weak acid such as sodium bicarbonate, borax, &c. or a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and boric acid, or a basic salt such as magnesium oxychloride. The solution obtained is passed by a pipe P down a stone-ware column Q up which chlorine, is passed from a container U through a meter T. Excess of chlorine escapes by a pipe q . Specification 128,635 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use of salts of hypochlorous acid such as magnesium, calcium or aluminium hypochloride in place of the basic salts present during the formation of hypochlorous acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.

Abstract: Chlorhydrins, mixed with olefin chlorides or not, are obtained by treating olefin hydrocarbons in an electrolytic cell generating chlorine; the process may be carried out by blowing steam and oil gas into the anode chamber of a cell electrolyzing salt solution at a temperature of 95-100 DEG C.; the vapours are led to a condenser and the aqueous hydrochloric acid condensate returned to the cell. Or a salt solution is kept saturated with the gaseous olefins and electrolyzed, the anode electrolyte being removed at intervals and the chlorhydrins blown off by steam. Specifications 113,954 and 113,955 are referred to.
