    Abstract: PURPOSE: To reduce the drag by introducing a viscous polymer through a filament or thread forming apparatus, etc., into a solvent stream, forming the viscous polymer into a fibrous form, completely blending the viscous polymer with the solvent in a shear strain apparatus, then retaining the resultant blend until the polymer has gelled in a holding apparatus and blending the viscous polymer with the solvent. CONSTITUTION: A solvent is introduced from an inlet 8 into an inner pipe 4 of a filament or thread forming apparatus 2 comprising the inner pipe 4 perforated with a number of holes 6 and wrapped with a fine wire mesh and an outer pipe 12 on the outside of the inner pipe 4 and a viscous polymer is introduced from an inlet 14 into an annulus between the inner pipe 4 and the outer pipe 12. The viscous polymer is introduced from the holes 6 into the solvent stream in the inner pipe 4 and formed into the shape of filaments or threads. Furthermore, the resultant filaments or threads are passed through an outlet 9, introduced from an inlet 11 into a shear strain apparatus 18 comprising a pipe 20 and passed through inner conical screens 24 to completely blend the viscous polymer with the solvent and the polymer and the solvent are then discharged from an outlet 22, subsequently passed through an inlet 32, fed to a holding apparatus 30 and retained until the polymer has gelled. Thereby, the viscous polymer which is a drag reducer for the solvent stream is completely blended in the solvent.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To surely detect a fracture by rotating a downhole orbital vibrator provided with two orthogonal motion sensors and an azimuth detector after lowering the vibrator in a borehole and displaying the outputs of the sensors as a Lissajou figure. CONSTITUTION: After a downhole logging device 12 is lowered to a desired depth in a borehole, the azimuths of two underground sound detectors arranged on an orbital source 24 are measured by an azimuth instrument 30. In addition, the phase angle between the sound detectors is measured by rotationally driving the source 24. The source 24 is continuously and increasingly rotated at the same depth by a motor 22 and measures both the phase angle and azimuths or bearings. The outputs of the two vertical underground sound detectors are displayed as a Lissajou figure and, when the figure forms an elliptical shape, the presence of an underground fracture is recognized.
