PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a trouble detection method for detecting a short circuit trouble in an injection device when an engine is started. SOLUTION: The injection device is provided with one or a plurality of piezoelectric fuel injectors 12a and 12b, and the injectors are connected in a drive circuit 20. In one embodiment, a potential VB at a bias point PB in the drive circuit is determined to be compared with a predicted voltage VPB. In a case where the potential at the bias point is not within a prescribed tolerable voltage VTOL of the predicted voltage, a short circuit trouble signal is generated. In another embodiment, a first charge pulse is applied to the injector to charge the injector. After the first charge pulse, a discharge switch Q2 is closed to provide a discharge current way 38 within a delay period Δt. A defective injector makes a discharge through the discharge current way within the delay period Δt. After the delay period, a second charge pulse is applied to the injector. In a case where current IS is detected during the second charge pulse, and when the current in the second charge pulse is larger than a prescribed threshold current, a short circuit warning signal is generated. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of operating a compression ignition engine capable of controlling an air-fuel ratio very well without impairing the operability or the responsiveness of the engine. SOLUTION: This method of operating a compression ignition engine comprises the steps of determining an instantaneous driver torque demand and selectively operating the engine in a first mode or a second mode dependent on the rate of change of driver torque demand. The first mode comprises an air lead mode whereby the intake air flow rate is controlled to achieve the instantaneous driver torque demand and an amount of fuel injected is controlled to obtain a target air/fuel ratio based upon the intake air flow rate. The second mode comprises a fuel lead mode wherein the amount of fuel injected is controlled to achieve the instantaneous torque demand. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply a longitudinal tensile stress to an actuator which is sufficient to mechanically align dipoles, thus generating a remanent magnetostriction which is uniform throughout the actuator, in order to solve the problem that piezoelectric actuators of the type comprising a stack of layers of ferroelectric material and intervening electrodes which extend partially across the adjacent ferroelectric layers cause differential remanent magnetostrictions, when electric fields are applied across the layers. SOLUTION: In a method for reducing stress gradients within a piezoelectric actuator 5, the actuator 5 is preferably heated while the tensile stress is applied, so as to increase the difference between the tensile strength of the material and the applied tensile stress. An alternative arrangement involves a step of subjecting the actuator to a multidirectional stress and a step of reducing the stress along the longitudinal direction. All the steps are performed on completed actuators. Under suitable temperature and load conditions, no margin fractures occur due to the tensile stress, and discontinuity is reduced in shape and electrode tip. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT

SOLUTION: A detector 80 detects the operating state of one or more fuel pumps in the fuel system. The fuel system comprises an accumulator volume 4 for storing a high pressure fuel, one or more injectors configured to fluid-communicate with the accumulator volume, and one or more the high pressure fuel pump 6 disposed to fluid-communicate with the accumulator volume to supply the hight pressure fuel. The operation of the one or more fuel pump is controlled by a filling puls signal from a control means 22. The detector comprises an input part for receiving the data to indicate at least one present system parameter, and a processing means configured to compare at least one present parameter for identifying the operating state of one or more fuel pump 6 with one or more predetermined system parameters. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vane camshaft phasor for changing the timing of the combustion valve of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This phasor comprises a seat formed on a sprocket at the proper intermediate rotating position of a rotor and a locking pin disposed in slidable contact with the vane of the rotor, engaged with the seat, and locking the rotor to a stator at the intermediate position. A bias spring system disposed on a cover plate biases the rotor from any of the delayed lock positions to the intermediate lock position. However, while the rotor is operated for valve timing advancement, it is not engaged with the rotor from the intermediate lock position. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve control of a piezoelectric actuator over the whole lifetime thereof and improve control of stack displacement in relation to accuracy since change of stroke/charge among parts is normally smaller than change of stroke/voltage among parts even if an operation condition such as change among parts changes without receiving influence of capacitance change due to lifetime of the stack. SOLUTION: A method for controlling displacement of a stack 2 of the piezoelectric actuator 1 for use in a fuel injector comprises a step determining a desirable amount of charge ΔQ to be added or removed from the stack 2. The method further comprises a step selecting a drive current level PO, SO and a drive time t open , t close in accordance with the desired amount of charge and an operating parameter, and a step driving the drive current through the stack 2 for the drive time t open , t close in order to add or remove the desired amount of charge.
