Abstract: 8963. Torrance, T., and Howell, J. H. May 15. Strainers.-The pulp is supplied into the upper open end of the apparatus shown in Fig. 4, and passes through apertures v into the annular space between an inner casing L and a ring of vertical rollers H, which are oscillated on their axles so as to cause the pulp to pass between them. The rollers carry at their upper ends segmental wheels which engage with an oscillating toothed ring N mounted on ball bearings and operated by a crank and connecting-rod R &c. Alternate rollers are made of smaller diameter than the others, so that the spaces between the rollers may be regulated by removing alternate rollers and substituting others of different diameter. The pulp which has passed between the rollers follows the course indicated by the arrows between the rollers H and a casing F, and between the latter and an outer casing A to the discharge aperture A'. The coarse portions of the pulp, which cannot pass between the rollers H, collect in the well C and inner chamber L. This chamber is provided with a reciprocating piston V, fitted with ball valves m , which agitates the pulp in the chamber and forces the lighter portions thereof through a valve plate S into the open upper part of the apparatus, where it is mixed with fresh pulp and again passed through the apparatus. The heavier and more impure portions of the pulp in the well C are forced by the reciprocations of the piston V through suitable valves X, Y to the beating-apparatus, to be further beaten and again supplied to the strainer. A second row of apertures may be provided above the apertures v, and the open end of the strainer may be fitted with a dome-shaped distributing-plate.

Abstract: 17,122. Tyler, W. A., and Howell, J. H. Aug. 24. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Single-stroke bells; church and like bells.- Bells are provided with one or more wroughtiron levers B to lift the clapper C off the bell A after striking. A cranked lever B is pivoted on a fulcrum F and has a counterbalancing - weight D, so that it has sufficient elasticity to permit the clapper to strike the bell. Stops H, H limit the movements of the weights D, E. A similar lever is fixed on the other side of the bell, acting on the reverse stroke of the bell.

Abstract: 22,483. King, A. D. W., and Howell, J. H. Nov. 10. Cooling liquids such as wort, milk, wines, condensed engine water, &c. A number of flat tubes or passages E carried by tube-plates F fit removably into cylinders A, which are closed by end covers J. Partitions H between the ends of the cylinders and the tube-plates cause the cooling-medium to take a circuitous course through the tubes E outside which the liquid to be cooled is circulated. Preferably the cylinders are arranged on stands in series of three, and are connected by pipes L, 0 so that the two liquids flow in reverse directions, and alternately up and down in adjacent sets.

Abstract: 24,870. Gardiner, G. C., and Howell, J. H. Nov. 6. Spray-producers; nozzles.-Relates to the class of spray. ing-apparatus, for use in appliances for aerating, heating, cooling, and vaporizing, having means for varying the spreading and spraying of the liquids and gases. The nozzle is cylindrical, the inlet opening to it is tangential to the cylinder, and means are provided for cleansing the inlet. The gases or liquids enter at a , acquire a rotary motion in the vessel A, and pass out through the orifice a as a hollow cone-shaped spray. The inlet a is part of a branch piece E which extends on either side of the circular casing. The end e of the hole as is closed by a removable plug e , which may be taken out, a wire being inserted when the inlet a requires cleaning. Boneshaped mouthpieces c, Figs. 8 and 11, may be fitted to the cover of the sprayer.
