    Abstract: The present application relates to an applicator for an arc-shaped soli d composition stick. The applicator comprises a housing defining an arc-shaped conduit that is sized to accept the arc-shaped solid composition stick. The housing also contains one, or more than one opening for engaging a fastener. Each on e of the one, or more than one opening is of a sufficient size to permit at least partial lateral movement of the fastener. Also included in the housing are an inlet and an outlet in communication with the conduit, and a biasing assembly for advancing the arc - shaped solid composition stick within the arc-shaped conduit. The position of the applicator of the present invention relative to a surface to be treated can be easily adjusted by laterally sliding the housing of the applicator relative to its mounting bracket.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a modified interlocking solid composition sti ck for applying to steel surfaces that are in sliding or rolling-sliding contact. T he modified stick comprises a body member with four sides, a first end and an opposed second end, and a nib member attached to the first end of the body member, the nib membe r having four sides connected by substantially curved side edges. The second end of t he body member contains a cavity with substantially curved sidewalk dimensioned to snugly receive a nib member of a corresponding interlocking solid stick. To reduce the likelihood of failure of the nib or cavity, the dimensions of the nib are optimized such that a length of one side of the nib member (nl) and a length of the side of the body member (1) in the same plane have a ratio (nl) from about 0.6 to about 0.75.

    Abstract: A method for applying a liquid composition to a rail surface is provided. Th is method involves supplying a liquid composition in one or more reservoirs on a rail car (revenue generating car), and applying the liquid composition from the one or more reservoirs to the rail surface. A liquid composition application system is also provided. The liquid composition application syst em includes a reservoir(s) for holding a liquid composition mounted on a rail car. A pipe is connected to the reservoir(s), and a pump, for moving the liquid composition from the reservoir(s) to a dispensing nozzle(s), is provided. A controller processes topological information, data from the liqu id composition application system, or both. The application of the liquid composition may be monitored and controlled from a remote site separate from the rail car.

    Abstract: A spray nozzle comprising a nozzle body (110) having an air channel in fluid communication with an air supply, and directing air to one or more air openings (160) at an end of the nozzle body, and a liquid channel in fluid communication with a liquid supply and directing a liquid to a liquid outlet (150) of the nozzle body. An air cap (120) is disposed at the end of the nozzle body and has an orifice in fluid communication with the one or more than one air openings, the orifice is disposed about the outside of the liqu id outlet. The spray nozzle also comprises an extension (170) placed on the liquid outlet, outlet protrudes beyond the surface of the air cap. The spray nozzle is well suited for use under windy conditions in that fouling of the nozzle is reduced or eliminated.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a friction management brake shoe adapted to engage the tread and the flange of a wheel of a railway vehicle via which the railway vehicle is guidably supported on a railed track. The friction management brake shoe comprises a backing plate having a flange member. There is a brake lining affixed to the backing plate and having a braking surface engageable with the wheel tread of a railway vehicle. The brake lining includes a first friction composition material formed with at least one of a solid high positive friction modifier and a solid very high positive friction modifier which establishes a required friction level between the wheel tread and the railed track for stopping a train. The brake shoe also has a flange part affixed to the flange member of the backing plate, such flange part having a friction surface engageable with the wheel flange of a railroad car wheel. The flange part includes a second friction material formed with a solid low coefficient of friction modifier which establishes a friction level of between about 0.08 and 0.15 at an interface between the wheel flange and the railed track.
