Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for conveniently producing a carbonaceous object large in specific surface area by using an expanded polyimide. SOLUTION: This method for producing the carbonaceous object comprises heating an expanded polyimide with an expansion ratio of 20 times or more and comprising a polyimide with a ≥300°C glass transition temperature under an anaerobic atmosphere at 1-50°C/min temperature rising rate up to a maximum temperature in the range of 600-2,000°C and carbonizing it.
