Abstract: PURPOSE: A hierarchial raid system having many raids and a method for controlling the same are provided to use a conventional raid including large amount of discs as a virtual disc for storing large-sized capacity, high performance, and high availability data. CONSTITUTION: At least one upper raid controlling unit(210) is connected to a host computing unit(200), has the first level(X), and controls a plurality of first lower raid control units(220-240) having the second level(Y) for using a raid of the lower level as a virtual disc. The lower raid control units(220-240) control a plurality of member discs based on a control of the upper raid controlling unit(210) for being used as a virtual disc of a raid having a relative upper level.
