Abstract: PURPOSE:To correct a spherical aberration and a comatic aberration with simple constitution while keeping adhesiveness and integrality with an optical element such as an optical fiber and to correct a chromatic aberration on the basis of the selection of a two-layer medium by forming the leading spherical part of a fine light rod lens by the two-layer medium concentering the border surface of two layers. CONSTITUTION:The leading spherical part of the rod lens is constituted of the two- layer medium concentering its border surface of the two layers while keeping integrality of the rod lens with another element such as an optical fiber. In the rod lens positioning a converged light point or emitted light point on its end face, the leading spherical part of the lens is formed by two layers consisting of the 1st layer 11 and the 2nd layer 12 and the border surfaces (1st and 2nd surfaces) between the peripheral medium (refractive index N1) of the leading spherical part and the 1st layer (refractive index N1'identicalN2) and between the 1st and 2nd layers (refractive index N2'identicalN3) are formed so as to be concentrical spheres (radiuses of curvature R1, R2) each other. The relation of respective refractive indexes is satisfied with N1'>N2'>N1 and the ratio R2/R1 of radiuses of curvature is selected approximately to a value by which the tertiary spherical aberration is set up to '0'.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To facilitate the observation of the end face of a connected optical fiber and to check the crack and soil of the end face by giving a reflecting surface to a discharging electrode bar and forming the opposite optical fiber end faces through said reflecting surface so that they can be observed. CONSTITUTION:The discharging electrode bar 2 is formed so as to serve also as an observing member 4, and its cross section is processed in a square shape, whose surface has the reflecting surface 3 subjected to the mirror processing. When the end face of the optical fiber 1 is observed, a distance between the optical fibers 1 and 1 is separated to insert the discharging electrode bar 2 being the observing member 4, and positioning is executed so that the end face of the optical fiber 1 to be connected, which has been previously cut at a right angle, and the reflecting surface 3 of the observing member 4 can make an angle of 45 deg.. The reflecting surface 3 projects the fiber end face to check it. When there is no abnormality, the is charging electrode bar 2 discharges and heats the optical fibers 1 and 1 at the dotted line position of a fiber holder 5, and their end faces re collated, welded and connected.
