Abstract: A method of joining metal components (2, 8) having the steps of depositing adhesive material (16) between the components and welding the components together via solid-state or fusion welding. The welds (18) are spaced apart from the adhesive material (16) and are produced so as to prevent exposure o f the adhesive material (16) to the welding (18). The two types of bonds (adhesive and welding) are produced in the components separated by time and space.

Abstract: A method of welding metal components together including moving a laser beam (20) in a first direction (A) along an interface (22) between a pair of meta l components (24, 26) such that in the vicinity of the focused beam (20), meta l from each component is vaporized to produce a keyhole (28) in a pool of molt en metal (30). The laser beam (20) is oscillated in a direction (B) different from (e.g. transverse to) the first direction such that the keyhole (28) oscillates through the pool of molten metal (30) and molten metal fills into the keyhole (28) as the position of the keyhole (28) changes.

Abstract: A method of welding continuous or intermittent lap-penetration joints uses a gas metal buried arc (GMBA) welding process. A first component (22) is GMBA welded to an underlying second metal component (24), by forming an arc (28) between a consumable metal electrode (26) and a surface of the first component (22), depositing metal from the electrode (26) to the first component (22) and producing a pool of molten metal (10) which extends through the first component (22) and into the second component (24). The molten pool metal solidifies into a weld (30) that extends into the second component (24) wherein the weld width at the interface between the components is at least equal to the thickness of the thinner of the first component (22) and the second component (24). The arc (28) is at least partially buried within the thickness of the first component and is moved in the direction of the desired joint location to produce a joint.

El metal acumulado fundido se solidifica a una soldadura (30) que se extiende al segundo componente (24) en donde el ancho de la soldadura en la internase entre los componentes es por lo menos igual al espesor del mas delgado del primer componente (22) y en el segundo componente (24). El arco es enterrado por lo menos parcialmente dentro del espesor del primer componente y es movido en la direccion de la ubicacion de junta deseada para producir una junta.
