Abstract: SURGICAL CASSETTE WITH COMPLIANT CLAMPING ZONE 5 Embodiments of the present invention provide a surgical cassette with compliant clamping zones to provide more uniform loading. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a surgical cassette includes a clamping portion that is configured to deform to conform to non-uniform load profile applied to the cassette. The clamping portion can include ribs that are sized and made of a suitable to material such that the ribs will deflect predictably in the elastic region and flow plastically when the material yield point is exceeded. The use of ribs creates discrete small load areas that will deflect and distort predictably and non-catastrophically at high loads. This allows for the absorption of accumulated tolerances between the clamping mechanism and cassette (e.g., the non-parallelism between the clamping 15 mechanism and cassette) while still providing a distributed load on the cassette.

Abstract: A valve system (200) comprising a valve design in which the valve is normally closed is disclosed. The normally closed valve can comprise a circular valve seal face (215) formed by the underside of a rim of an elastomeric valve boss (210) and a circular valve seat (220), which is formed by the rim of a through hole (225) molded into, for example, a plastic cassette (150), such that the valve seal face, the valve seat, and the through hole are concentric. The valve boss can be a hollow "mushroom" shaped valve boss, or a conical-shaped valve boss. If no force is applied to the inside surface (240) of the valve boss, no fluid can pass through the valve as the valve seal face rests against the valve seat as a result of the steady free state load created by the stretch of the valve boss over the slightly longer through hole. When a force (246) is applied to the inside surface (240) of the valve boss (210), the valve seal face (215) is displaced from the valve seat (220), allowing fluid between the valve seal face and the valve seat and then to pass between the valve boss and the inside surface of the through hole.

Abstract: A continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system (300) is provided by embodiments of the present invention. This continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system includes a unique fluid level sensor having a point light source (202), parabolic reflector (204), sensor array (308), and detection, processing and control system (310). The point light source illumines a parabolic reflector wherein the point light source is located at the focus of the parabolic reflector. The parabolic reflector reflects light from the point light source to produce a parallel light curtain (210). This parallel light curtain is parallel to an axis of symmetry of the parabolic reflector. The parallel light curtain illumines a chamber (302) such as a chamber in an ophthalmic surgical device used to contain surgical fluid (304). The sensor array coupled to the chamber detects the parallel light curtain illuminating the chamber. The sensor array provides an output to a detection/processing/control system in order to determine the fluid level within the chamber. This optical method of determining the surgical fluid levels may be advantageous in that it prevents physical contamination of the surgical fluids.
