    Abstract: A wire rope is provided having a central core strand (14) about which are wound outer strands (12). Spacer strands (16) are present in the gaps between the core strand (14) and outer strands (12) to ensure uniformity of such gaps. A coating (18), usually of a suitable thermoplastic, is extruded into the rope to form a spacer between the core and outer strands and the adjacent outer strands.
