    Abstract: A surfactant mixture comprises (a) 35 to 40 parts by weight of a monoalkylamide, dialkyl-amide, cycloalkylamide or alkylenamide of a monosulphonated and/or monosulphated unsaturated fatty acid having 14 to 22 carbon atoms, at least one of the alkyl or cycloalkyl radicals or the alkylene radical containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms and the chain of carbon atoms in said radicals being optionally interrupted by -O-or -NH-radicals, (b) 12 to 20 parts by weight of a monoalkylamide, dialkylamide, cycloalkylamide or alkylenamide of an unsaturated fatty acid having 14 to 22 carbon atoms, at least one of the alkyl or cycloalkyl radicals or the alkylene radical containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms and the chain of carbon atoms in said radicals being optionally interrupted by -O- or -NH- radicals, (c) 2 to 4 parts by weight of an unsaturated fatty acid having 14 to 22 carbon atoms or an alkali-metal or ammonium salt thereof, and (d) 0.05 to 2.5 parts by weight of a completely dissociating inorganic salt, e.g. sodium chloride or sodium sulphate.ALSO:A process for treating textiles comprises contacting them with a textile-treatment liquor containing a surfactant mixture comprising (a) 35 to 40 parts by weight of a monoalkylamide, dialkylamide, cycloalkylamide, or alkylenamide of a monosulphonated and/or monosulphated unsaturated fatty acid having 14 to 22 carbon atoms, at least one of the alkyl, or cycloalkyl radicals or the alkylene radical containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms and the chain of carbon atoms in said radicals being optionally interrupted by -O- or -NH- radicals, (b) 12 to 20 parts by weight of a monoalkylamide, dialkylamide, cycloalkylamide or alkylenamide of an unsaturated fatty acid having 14 to 22 carbon atoms, at least one of the alkyl or cycloalkyl radicals or the alkylene radical containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms and the chain of carbon atoms in these radicals being optionally interrupted by -O- or -NH- radicals (c) 2 to 4 parts by weight of an unsaturated fatty acid having 14 to 22 carbon atoms or an alkali-metal or ammonium salt thereof, and (d) 0.05 to 2.5 parts by weight of a completely dissociating inorganic salt, e.g. sodium chloride or sodium sulphate. Such liquors are useful as wetting agents for prewetting or reboiling skein yarn, wetting agents for bleaching without preboiling, dyeassistants for substantive dyeing of cotton, dyeassistants for dyeing cotton with sulphur dyes, wetting agents for vats containing levelling agents, wetting agents for bottoming liquors for dyeing cotton with developing dyes, wetting agents for dyeing union goods, and levelling agents in dyeing polyamide fibres with acid dyes.

    Abstract: A pickling solution (pH 4 to 9) for removing rust from iron and steel contains an a-aminocarboxylic acid having at least one group with a formula in which X denotes the radical -CH2-CH2-OH or -CH2-COOH and/or an alkali metal salt of such an acid, and a polyalcohol having at least four hydroxyl groups but no aldehyde groups e.g. erythritol, adenitol, arabitol, hexitols, xylitol, sorbitol, dulcitol, mannitol, and pentaerythritol. A reducing agent, e.g. alkali metal sulphites, bisulphites and dithionites and alkali metal salts of a-hydroxyalkenesulphinic acids and a-aminoalkenesulphinic acids. In an example 100g. of the tetrasodium salt of ethylenediaminotetracetic acid, and 100g. of sorbitol are dissolved in 1 litre of water, and the pH adjusted to 5 with sulphinic acid or sodium hydrogen sulphate.

    Abstract: An antifoaming agent comprises a tributyl and/or triamyl phosphate and 0.1 - 20% of the active ingredients, of one or more C14-C22 saturated monocarboxylic acids. The phosphate ester may be of a normal or branched chain butyl or amyl group, isobutyl being preferred. Specified acids are normal myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachidic and behenic acids. Solvents and diluents e.g. low molecular weight alcohols, e.g. n-propanol, glycols and glycol ethers may also be present in the composition. The composition may be used in an amount of 0.02 - 0.05% of the liquid to be treated, in Examples an aqueous liquid containing an alkylbenzene sulphonate possibly containing Na2CO3 or an ethylene oxide-isooctylphenol adduct. The composition may be poured or sprayed onto foaming liquid or added prior to foaming. They may be incorporated into detergents, cleaning and wetting agents, textile treating agents e.g. kier boiling assistants and mercerising assistants and plant protection ingredients. They are particularly active in the presence of ions producing hardness e.g. Mg and Ca ions. Comparative examples disclose mixtures comprising caprylic, lauric and oleic acids and tri-n-propyl, i-octyl, i-nonyl and i-decyl phosphates.
