Abstract: The invention described in the parent Specification is modified by the use of fumaric instead of maleic esters, the products being useful for the same purposes. In examples: (1) vinyl chloride and dimethyl fumarate are emulsified in an aqueous solution of sodium a -hydroxyoctodecane sulphonate, hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate and formic acid, and polymerized at 40 to 45 DEG C., the polymerizate being coagulated by aluminium sulphate solution, washed with water followed by dilute caustic soda, filtered, and dried to give a product soluble in methylene chloride; (2) diethyl fumarate is emulsified in an aqueous solution of sodium a -hydroxyoctodecane sulphonate, sodium persulphate, hydrogen peroxide, and ammonium formate, and vinyl chloride is added, the mixture being then polymerized at 45 DEG C., unchanged fumarate being blown off by steam and the product worked up as in example 1. There may be used instead of diethyl fumarate the neutral fumarate of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether or di-n- or di-iso-butyl fumarate or the fumarates of mixtures of aliphatic alcohols having 6 and 7 carbon atoms (such as are obtained in the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide), the products being particularly suitable for insulating and jacketing cables.
