Abstract: Concretes are prepared by adding to the conventional mix, 0.5 to 50% by weight, based on the weight of cement, of a copolymer of 20-80% vinyl chloride and 80-20% of vinyl proprionate in the form of an aqueous dispersion or a redispersible powder 0.5-60% by weight, based on the copolymer, of hydrocarbons may also be added e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene, the higher boiling aliphatics and the terpenes. The dispersing agent may be polyvinyl alcohol.

Abstract: 1. A continuous process for preparing microcapsules having melamine-formaldehyde condensate capsule walls in aqueous dispersion starting from appropriate water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde precondensates in the presence of water-soluble high polymers containing strongly acid groups, which comprises either 1) continuously mixing the water-soluble precondensate, the hydrophobic material to be encapsulated and the aqueous solution of the high polymer containing strongly acid groups, 2) further condensing the water-soluble precondensate in this mixture at pH 3.0-6.5 until the solution starts to become cloudy, 3) continuously dispersing the hydrophobic material in the aqueous dispersion formed, the fine droplets of the hydrophobic material being enveloped by the water-insoluble condensate resulting from the precondensate, or 1a) continuously mixing the water-soluble precondensate and the aqueous solution of the high polymer containing strongly acid groups, 2a) further condensing the water-soluble precondensate in the mixture at pH 3.0-6.5 until the solution starts to become cloudy, then 3a) continuously dispersing the hydrophobic material in the aqueous dispersion formed, the fine droplets of the hydrophobic material being enveloped by the water-insoluble condensate resulting from the precondensate, and then 4) condensing the wall material of the resulting microcapsules to completion.

Abstract: A composite laminate consists of (a) a layer of non-conducting material, and (b) a layer of a mixt. of micro-capsules, in which part of the micro-capsules contains cpds. of the pyrrole class, and another part contains an oxidising agent. The laminate is pref. formed from 2 non-conducting layers, opt. of different materials. Synthetics, e.g. PVC, polystyrene or polyethylene, or paper or cellulose derivs., are suitable. Pref. at least part of the microcapsules contain a conducting salt.

Abstract: 1,129,974. Coating. BADISCHE ANILIN - & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 4 Feb., 1966 [5 Feb., 1965], No. 4948/66. Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates may be coated with aqueous dispersions of vinyl ester polymers prepared by polymerising vinyl esters in the presence of catalysts and modified polyvinyl alcohols which are saponification products of copolymers of 90 to 99.9 weight per cent of a vinyl ester of a C 1-3 aliphatic saturated monocarboxylic acid and 0.1 to 10 weight per cent of a vinyl ester of a C 4-20 aliphatic saturated monocarboxylic acid in which the carboxylic group is α to a tertiary or quarternary carbon atom. In an example cardboard is coated with a dispersion of polyvinyl propionate prepared in the presence of a saponified vinyl acetate/vinyl 2,2,4,4- tetramethyl valerate copolymer, said dispersion being mixed with a paste of lithopone in aqueous ammonium polyacrylate solution.

Abstract: 1,155,275. Styrene/acrylate and/or methacrylate copolymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA FABRIK A.G. 28 Oct., 1966 [29 Oct., 1965], No. 48419/66. Heading C3P. Polymer dispersions are produced by copolymerizing styrene with 5-95% of esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid with C 1-8 alcohols in an aqueous medium in the presence of catalysts and emulsifiers, 0À01-2% of a protective colloid being gradually added after 20-80/) of the monomers have been copolymerized, and then completing the copolymerization. The esters may be ethyl, n- or tert-butyl, 2-ethylhexyl or cyclohexyl acrylate and/or methyl or butyl methacrylate. The copolymer may also include acrylic acid, acrylamide, methacrylamide, methyl vinyl carbinol, or vinyl sulphonic acid. Polyvinyl methyl ether may be present during the polymerization. The protective colloid may be a polyvinyl alcohol, which may be acetalized with n-butyraldehyde and completely hydrolysed, a hydroxyethyl cellulose, an ammoniacal solution of polyacrylic acid or a copolymer of acrylic acid/acrylamide/ acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate. The emulsifier may be the sodium salt of the sulphonated nonyl-phenol/ethylene oxide, ethylene oxide/noctylphenol, sodium vinyl sulphonate or propylene oxide/ethylene oxide. The catalyst may be potassium persulphate.
