Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for a remote multi-purpose user interface for medical devices and systems within a healthcare / medication delivery system and/or medication information technology system. The multi-purpose user interface has a housing, a processor, a memory, a communications interface for providing communication between the user interface and a medical device and for providing communications between the user interface and a first central computer, and a display for displaying a medical prompt and for displaying medical information received from the first central computer. The user interface is configured to communicate and interact with a plurality of medical treatment devices in a one to many manner to control operation of the plurality of medical devices. A system and method is also disclosed for medical data tracking, analyzing and reporting within a healthcare system. The system can further integrate vital signs and infusion pump monitoring and reporting, and allow for enhanced provision of medical care through interface screens which combine this functionality. The system can also provide for control from a central interface screen utilizing this integrated functionality.

Abstract: A system and method for operating medical devices is provided. The system may be used to program a medical device such as an infusion pump. The system may be implemented in a variety of ways including as a computer system. The system may include a first computer at a pharmacy and a second computer at a treatment location. The system sends operating parameters to the medical device after providing various checks to assure that the correct medication is being administered to the correct patient. The system includes features for confirming the operating parameters are still valid and features for sending alarms to the treatment location if there are discrepancies between the operating parameters, medication identifiers, and/or patient identifiers.

Abstract: A system and method for assisting in verifying that the right medication is efficiently provided to the right patient, in the right dose, at the right time, and via the right route is employed for administering an infusion order (702) including a first administration, a medication, and a flow rate. The system includes first, second, and third computers. The first computer receives data identifying the order (702), the second computer provides instructions for preparing the first administration and provides a first schedule for preparation of additional administrations if additional administrations are included in the order, and the third computer provides instructions for the first administration and provides an initiation signal to the infusion machine indicating the initiation of the first administration to the patient. The third computer also provides a flow rate modification signal. The modification signal causes the system to determine whether to generate a second schedule which the second computer provides if required.

Abstract: A medical fluid control system (10) is in the form of a medical line-set adapted to deliver a medication from a container (20) to a patient. The line-set has a tubing (12) having a MEMS element (14) attached thereto. In a preferred embodiment, the MEMS element (14) is a MEMS pump (14). The tubing (12) has a first end (16) that is connected to the container (20) and a second end (18) that is connected to the patient. The MEMS pump (14) can be controlled by an external controller (38) that is operably connected to the MEMS pump (14) to deliver medication from the container (20), through the tubing (12), and to the patient.

Abstract: A medication delivery system (20) having features of the present invention comprises a medical container (26) holding a prescribed medication (27) to be delivered to a patient, a tag 24 adapted to be worn by the patient, a handheld computing device (22), and an electronic medication delivery device (30). Data on the medication (27) is contained in a first label (28) on the medication container (27). The first label (28) also contains the instruction on how the medication is delivered to the patient, including the appropriate settings for an electronic medication delivery device for delivering the medication to the patient. Patient data is contained in a second label (29) on the tag (24) worn by the patient. The medication data, medication delivery instruction, and patient data are provided in machine readable formats. The handheld computing device (22) reads the medication data and the medication delivery instruction on the medication container (26) and the patient data on the patient tag (24). The handheld computing device (22) stores the information obtained and performs a matching check to confirm that the medication data matches with the patient data. Upon a confirmed match, it transmits the medication delivery instruction to the electronic medication delivery device (30), which downloads the instruction, programs the delivery device 30, and prompts an operator to begin delivering the medication (27) to the patient according to the downloaded instruction.
