Abstract: An infusion pump which is operable to pump fluid through a tube 5 has a tubeway defined on an anvil 570. A tube present sensor has a sensor arm (338 fig 14) pivotable about shaft (410 fig 14). A return spring biases a blade tip 344 on the arm against the anvil 570. Inserting a tube into the tubeway lifts blade 344 off anvil 570 causing flag 342 to interrupt the light beam of optical switch 364. A sensor may be provided on upstream and downstream sides of the pump.

Abstract: An infusion pump, operable to pump fluid through a tube 5, comprises a shuttle (200 fig 11) having indent 204 which pumps fluid by deforming and reforming a tube 5 held in upper jaw 220 and lower jaw 222, has a upstream valve 412, a downstream valve 414 and a cam (100 fig 2) having a first face (102 fig 5) actuating the shuttle and a second face (104 fig 6) actuating the valves via cam lands (120, 122 fig 6) and cam followers 430, 458. The shuttle has a position sensor comprising two magnets (324, 326 fig 11) and a Hall effect sensor (322 fig 11). The pump volume output is linearized with respect to either time or the cyclic deformation by the cam profile on the first face and by varing the speed of the motor (24 fig 12) which drives the cam.

Abstract: An automatic tube loading apparatus, for use with an infusion pump, comprises cams (614,624 fig 19) to actuate pawls 514 mounted on layshaft 512 which are operable to draw tube 5 towards a tubestop on platen 500 via tube capture surface 528. The cams are driven by a motor (550 fig 20) having an encoder (702,704,705 fig 20) so that the position of the cams may be deduced. If the tube is outside the loading area, tube reject surface 532 will expel the tube 5. The pawls are driven by sprung cam followers so if the tube 5 is partially loaded, misload activating surface 530 will pinch the tube 5. An electronic circuit detects from a sensor that the pawl has then stopped, but that the cams are still moving, such differential movement causing the motor to reverse direction to open the pawls and expel the tube 5.

Abstract: A medical infusion pump is disclosed which provides for greatly improved accuracy in the delivery of medica- ments to a patient. Among the various features included in the instant invention is a pumping body which serves to deform and reform a tube so as to maintain the initial cross section thereof and thereby preserve the output accuracy of the pump. Also disclosed with regard to the pumping body is a wholly mechanical synchronization of the pump- ing body and valves associated therewith and coactive with the aforementioned synchronization a mechanical lineariza- tion of output of the pumping body per each pumping cy- cle. Additionally, several features which serve to enhance the utility of the instant invention are also included therein among which is an associated assembly operative to auto- matically load or disload a tube or IV sa into or out of the pumping body. Associated with the assembly operative to automatically load or disload a tube and disclosed herein is an assembly operative to selectively open or close a slide clamp associated with the tube in such a way as to ensure that the tube is occluded such that in combination with the valves associated with the pumping body, a condition of free-flow of medicament is never realized. Additionally disclosed are sensor housings adapted to measurevarious quantities associated with fluid flowing through the tube wherein the housings are with associated components adapted to achieve a substantially normal orientation with respect to the sidewall of the tube and in the achieving of such normal orientation, expressing an essentially zero elastic stress gradient across the tube.

Abstract: In a medical infusion pump an assembly (Figs 18,19) is operative to automatically load or unload a tube 8 or an IV set into or out of a pumping assembly (Fig 2). Associated with the assembly for automatically loading or unloading the tube is an assembly for opening or closing a slide clamp (895, Fig 27). When the loading of the tube is initiated a number of pawls (514, Figs 16,18) and an upper jaw clasp the tube and draw it into a tubeway where it is held. The pumping assembly achieves a wholly mechanical synchronisation of the tube deformation/reformation and the operation of valves (412,414, Figs 13,14) associated therewith to produce a mechanical linearisation of output per pumping cycle. The occlusion of the tube in synchronism with operation of the valves is such that free-flow of medicament never occurs. Also disclosed are sensors for measuring various quantities associated with fluid flowing through the tube.
