Abstract: 1676. Blondel, A. Feb. 5, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Moulding electrodes for arc lamps.-Relates to improvements in the details of processes for manufacturing electrodes for arc lamps, (some of such processes being described in Specification No. 6061, A.D. 1903), and especially with regard to the accurate centering of the dies to one another. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the inside die a is carried by the same piece b as carries the outlet die e. The die a is surrounded with a washer d, pierced with holes and fixed to the piece b. The washer d is provided with a brass obturator e and a copper washer f. The dies may be removed by unscrewing either of the pieces b, h. The crosshead l carries rods l for the formation of the hollow cores. In a modification, the inner die i is provided with a hemispherical cap, resting upon similar bearings of the piece a. The die i may thus take up a varying position under the influence of the pressure of the paste, forming the outer envelope. Fig. 16 shows an arrangement in which a carbon envelope may be formed round a rod of mineralized carbon. The carbon rod u is guided by the double concentric die a of the type shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 18 shows an apparatus for making electrodes having three concentric zones. Two pistons feed the outer die c, and two others (not shown) the intermediate die b, while the central piston feeds the inner die a.

Abstract: 23,262. Blondel, A. Oct. 24. Arc lamps.-Electrodes containing 10 to 70 per cent. of light-increasing substances are made with 3 to 25 per cent. of borates, such as borate of barium, strontium, magnesium, calcium, aluminium, potassium, sodium, lithium, cerium, or zinc, singly or mixed, to steady the light. The colour of the light may be varied by selecting the base. A mixture of boric acid and an oxide or carbonate may be used instead of a borate. The other light-increasing substances may be calcium fluoride, oxide, carbide, or phosphate, salts of potassium, sodium, or lithium, or the like ; alkaline silicates are mentioned in the Provisional Specification. The borate is preferably mixed or fused with the other light-increasing substances before addition to the paste of carbon and binding-material. The Provisional Specification mentions the use of other barium salts instead of the borate. The borates may be used in cores or layers for carbons, or with cores or layers, as described in Specifications No. 17.406, A.D. 1902, and No. 6060, A.D. 1903. Specification No. 21,637, A.D. 1899, is also referred to.

Abstract: 23,417. Blondel, A. June 6, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Current meters.- Reflecting-galvanometers for rapidlyvarying currents are made with thin pure soft iron strips extended between fixed supports in strong magnetic fields. In one arrangement, a single iron strip, shown in section at M, Fig. 2, is magnetized transversely by the field between two flat laminated pole-pieces P, P of a permanent magnet or electromagnet ; coils D, carrying the current to be measured, are fixed near the pole-pieces, and cause twisting of the strip, the middle of which carries a small mirror. The strip is stretched by a spring or weight. The strip, spring, and two small polepieces may be mounted in a tube, which is placed between the magnet poles, and filled with oil to damp the oscillations. Two or more strips may be mounted separately in one magnetic circuit, iron pole-pieces being placed between the pairs of coils. In another arrangement, the current is passed in opposite directions through two parallel iron strips, which are stretched in a magnetic field between two solid pole-pieces, and carry a mirror at their centres.

Abstract: 12,024. Blondel, A. May 18. [Addition to 6060/03, Class 39, Electric lamps &c.] Processes. - In the manufacture of a r clamp electrodes of the kind described in the parent Specification, an unbaked carbon envelope, separately made, is filled with paste and is then compressed either endwise in a slightly larger cylinder or by squirting. In the latter case the paste rod and envelope may be made. in short pieces a , b ; the tapered end of the squirting reservoir is first filled by a plug of carbon or other paste which is expelled before the electrode material. The filling may be made separately from the envelope or forced into it by means of a coring-press. The invention is applicable to an electrode containing several co-axial zones of different pastes within a carbon envelope.

Abstract: 19,712. Blondel, A. Sept. 29. Arc lamps.-Mineralized electrodes are supplied with current near the arc by means of friction shoes or ring or other clutches. In one form, a concave shoe 5, Fig. 1, is pivoted at 6 to an arm 7, hinged at its upper end to the lamp frame, and is pressed against the electrode 3 by the action of a weight 10, aided in some cases by springs 11. The shoe is concave, and is bevelled to allow the carbonholder 1 to pass it. The projecting-plate 4 is electrically connected to the shoe. In a modification, a shoe convex in elevation is carried by the inclined arms of bent levers, and may be situated in a recess in an economizer above the arc. In the case of lower carbons, two bevelled friction blocks 22, 24, Fig. 6, may be attached respectively to a fixed arm 21 and to links 26, the block 24 being pressed against the carbon by its own weight, or by springs or additional weights. The carbonholder 17 is connected by a swivel joint 18 to its carrier 16. Alternatively, the carbon may pass through a hole in a cross-bar, to which are pivoted bell-crank levers carrying the friction block. In place of the friction shoe, there may be used a ring 33, Fig. 10, surrounding the upper carbon and having attached to it a stem 37 weighted so that the ring acts as a clutch. The economizer 35 causes the disengagement of the ring when the carbon descends. The ring may be replaced by a perforated or recessed plate, and in some cases there is provided a silver contact-piece, situated at the side of the aperture. The clutch shown in Fig. 16, having a pawl lever or levers 44 pivoted to the ring 43, may likewise be used ; or the ring may be made in two hinged parts, each having a weighted stem. To guide the clutch, an eye 42, embracing a fixed rod 41, may be attached to the stem, plate, or pawl lever. The rod 41 may be insulated and may serve to convey current to the clutch, in which case the eye has internal contactsprings. If the rod is not insulated, the eye is made of ebonite or porcelain, is provided with an insulated bushing, for instance in the form of beads strung on a wire constituting the eye, or is insulated by a plate of mica from the clutch, when this consists of a perforated plate. Several clutches, connected by a flexible wire, may be supported at intervals on the carbon, and may be shaped so as to fit compactly together in a recess in the economizer as they are in turn disengaged. For a lower carbon, a clutch ring is used having an extension adapted to engage the economizer, or the releasing-stop may consist of a projection from a sleeve which guides the carbon near the arc ; the eye in this case embraces the rod carrying the carbon-holder. The invention is applicable also to lamps having downwardly-convergent electrodes. The electrodes may be coated with pure carbon. Lamps provided with devices such as the above are stated to be capable of being run three or four in series, with a small steadying- resistance in some cases, on a circuit of 110-120 volts.
