PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel cord for reinforcing a rubber article; and to provide a pneumatic radial tire having improved durability by using the steel cord for reinforcing the rubber article as a reinforcing material. SOLUTION: The steel cord for reinforcing the rubber article has a 1+6 double twisted structure constituted of one core strand having two- or three-ply layered twist structure, and six sheath strands surrounding the core strand and having two- or three-ply layered twist structures. The whole layered twist directions in the core strand 1 and the twist direction of the sheath strand 4 are the same direction, and the layered twist directions in the sheath strands 4 are the combination of different directions. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cord improving bending and compression durability without causing an increase in weight. SOLUTION: The cord 10 comprises a wrapping filament 16 wrapped around a cord body 14 composed of a plurality of filaments 12 with an amplitude in the direction intersecting the cord radial direction at right angles in a helical form. Thereby, the wrapping filament 16 can be deformed in the direction to lengthen the wavelength to relax tension applied to the wrapping filament 16 when the tension is applied to the wrapping filament 16. Thereby, the breaking of the wrapping filament 16 is suppressed. SOLUTION: The pneumatic tire is obtained by applying a rubber composition comprising an antibacterial agent to at least a sheath member of the tire.
