Abstract: A liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of oppositely disposed substrates respectively having thereon a group of stripe-shaped scanning electrodes and a group of stripe-shaped data electrodes disposed to intersect the scanning electrodes and a liquid crystal disposed between the scanning electrodes and the data electrodes so as to form a pixel at each intersection of the scanning electrodes and the data electrodes. The liquid crystal device is driven by applying a scanning selection signal sequentially to the scanning electrodes, and applying data signals to the data electrodes while phase modulating the data signals depending on given gradation data. One unit period of data signal is divided into plural sections, the data signals in each section are phase-modulated in one direction in accordance with an increase in gradation data, and the data signals in mutually adjacent sections are phase-modulated in mutually opposite directions in accordance with an increase in gradation data.

Abstract: This invention provides a liquid crystal device, comprising: a pair of substrates (11a,11b), and a chiral smectic liquid crystal (15), said chiral smectic liquid crystal has a temperature range for providing smectic A phase on a higher temperature side than its chiral smectic C phase, is placed in chiral smectic C phase by cooling through the temperature range of the smectic A phase, and is disposed between the substrates so as to form a layer structure including a plurality of layers each composed of plural liquid crystal molecules and an alignment state of suppressing a helical structure inherent to the chiral smectic liquid crystal. Said plurality of layers are bent so as to form a region of a major areal proportion, wherein the layers are rotated in a direction so as to form the bent layers with respect to an adjacent substrate, which direction is reverse to a rotation direction of liquid crystal molecules adjacent to the adjacent substrate for standing up from the adjacent substrate, in a temperature region close to a transition temperature between the smectic A phase and the chiral smectic C phase.

Abstract: A ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal device having an improved impact resistance and an improved contrast is provided by using a pair of substrates provided with uniaxial alignment axes which are parallel and identical in direction with each other. A ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal is disposed between the pair of substrates so as to assume a higher-temperature alignment state and a lowertemperature alignment state on temperature decrease in its ferroelectric smectic phase placed in a bistable alignment state. The ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal is further placed in the lower-temperature alignment state which is characterized by having an inclination of forming a connected pair of a lightning defect and a hair pin defect coming after the lightning defect.
