    Abstract: A method of making a segmented core optical waveguide preform for making fiber that is resistant to attenuation increases due to hydrogen and heat aging. A first core region comprising a silica glass rod containing at least a first dopant such as fluorine is inserted into a central opening of a second core region comprising silica soot containing a second dopant such as germanium. The first core region and second core region are consolidated together to form a segmented core region and cladding is deposited on the outer surface of the segmented core region. The second core region having the central opening is made by depositing silica soot containing the second dopant and removing the mandrel.

    Abstract: A method is provided of forming an elongated glass article, comprising providing a tubular glass handle having a mandrel protruding from one end thereof, rotating the combination of mandrel and tube, and directing toward the rotating mandrel and an end portion of the tube a stream of glass particles comprising SiO 2 doped with at least 15 wt. % B 2 O 3 while reciprocating said mandrel and tube with respect to said stream to build up a porous glass coating. The mandrel is then removed from the porous glass coating and tube to form an assembly of handle and tubular porous preform. The porous preform is heated to consolidate it to a dense glass preform having an axial aperture, and to fuse the dense glass preform to the handle. NF 3 is flowed through the aperture while maintaining the temperature of the consolidated preform above 600°C but below that temperature which would cause the substantial elongation of the blank.

The resultant tapered aperture has a surface smoothness and shape that greatly facilitates the insertion of optical fibers during the fabrication of optical energy transfer devices.

    Abstract: There is initially formed a draw blank having diametrically opposed longitudinal apertures in the cladding glass parallel to the core glass region. The draw blank is drawn into a fiber under such conditions that the apertures close as the fiber is being drawn. The flow of surrounding glass, including the core glass region, toward the collapsing apertures, causes the core to assume an elliptical shape. The apertures are of such cross-sectional area and spacing from the core that the core develops the desired aspect ratio.

    Abstract: A fiber optic coupler of the type wherein first and second single-mode optical fibers, each having a core and a cladding, are fused together along a portion of the lengths thereof to form a coupling region.     Abstract: To fabricate polarization retaining couplers, the fibers must be kept untwisted and must be maintained parallel to one another, and the major axes of the polavitation-retaining single mode (PRSM) (115,116) fibers must be maintained substantially parallel to one another. It is noted that this orientation includes that orientation wherein the major axes are substantially coaxial. The method of the present invention is characterized in that the fiber coating material is utilized to facilitate the alignment of the major axes of the fibers. In a first described embodiment, each fiber is provided with a rectangularly shaped coating (117,118), and the two larger flattened sides of the coating are specifically oriented with respect to the major and minor axes of the PRSM fiber therein. Cores (141) and (143) of optical fibers (115) and (116), respectively, are elliptically-shaped, and the minor axis of each core is parallel to the long flat sides of the rectangularly-shaped coating. In one embodiment, tube (110) is heated and collapsed onto fibers (115) and (116) in a step that is separate from the step of stretching the midregion of tube (110). The flame from burner (129) is directed onto midregion (128) to heat glass tube (110) to its softening point. Burner (129) may remain stationary, or it may traverse midregion (128) in the direction toward vacuum source (126) as shown by arrow (130). It is an optional feature of the tube collapse step to apply a vacuum source to both hollow filaments (121) and (122), in which case the direction of burner traverse is immaterial. Midregion (128) becomes a solid region that is preferably free of air lines, bubbles, or the like.

    Abstract: An optical fiber coupler is formed by providing a glass tube (10) having a longitudinal aperture (12). Two contiguous carbon tubes (14,15) are disposed within the longitudinal aperture which is thereafter collapsed thereon. A glass capillary tube (30) is formed by removing the carbon tubes. The tube can be stretched to form a precision capillary tube which is severed into coupler-length tubes (44). Two optical fibers (52,53), which are shorter in length than the aperture (46) of a coupler-length tube (44), are centered in that aperture. The midregion (59) of the resultant assembly is heated and collapsed about the central portions of the fibers. The central region of the resultant coupler preform is heated and drawn to reduce the diameter thereof.     Abstract: This invention relates to a method forming fluorine-doped glass. A coating of glass particles is deposited on the surface of a cylindrical rod of high purity glass. The coated rod is inserted into a furnace which contains a cylindrical muffle formed of high silica content glass. A fluorine-containing atmosphere is flowed through the muffle and over the outer surface of the coating of glass particles and also flows inwardly through the interstices thereof. The temperature within the furnace is sufficiently high to cause fluorine to diffuse into the surfaces of the glass particles and to cause the particles to fuse and form a fluorine-containing dense glass coating on the surface of the rod.
