    Abstract: A single-mode optical waveguide fiber designed to limit power penalty due to four wave mixing and a method of making the waveguide is disclosed. Variations in properties, e.g., radius or refractive index, of the waveguide fiber core provide a total dispersion which varies along the length of the waveguide. The algebraic sum of products of length times total dispersion is controlled to a pre-selected value for each waveguide fiber which makes up a system link. Proper choice of total dispersion variation magnitude and sub-length results in a system link wherein a signal travels only short distances in waveguide portions having total dispersion near zero. However, the variation of the total dispersion provides a system link which has a pre-selected dispersive effect on the signal over a selected wavelength range. The dispersive effect on the signal can be chosen to be essentially zero. A number of techniques for fabricating DM fiber are also disclosed.

    Abstract: This invention is directed to the production of transparent glasses exhibiting transmission far into the infrared regime of the radiation spectrum. The glasses consist essentially, in mole percent, of 42-55% CdF2 and/or CdCl2, 30-40% NaF and/or NaCl, 2-20% total of BaF2 and/or BaCl2 + KF and/or KCl, consisting of 0-15% BaF2 and/or BaCl2 and 0-7% KF and/or KCl, 1-12% total of at least one stabilizing metal halide selected from the group LiX, BeX2, MgX2, MnX2, PbX2, TlX, CoX2, and ZnX2, and 0.005-0.5% ReX3, wherein Re is at least one rare earth metal selected from the lanthanide series of rare earth metals and X is at least one halide selected from the group consisting of fluoride, chloride, and bromide. The preferred glasses contain at least 2% each of BaF2 and/or BaCl2 and KF and/or KCl.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a mode field modifier which can be used in a fiber-to-fiber connector or a source-to-fiber connector. In a downtaper-type mode field modifier embodiment, the modifier comprises a modifier core of refractive index n1 surrounded by first and second cladding layers having refractive indices n2 and n3, respectively. In an uptaper-type mode field modifier embodiment, the modifier comprises a modifier core of refractive index n1 surrounded by a cladding layer having a refractive index n2. The refractive indices are such that n1 > n2 > n3. In both embodiments, there is a nonadiabatic taper intermediate the ends of the mode field modifier, whereby a substantial amount of mode coupling occurs therein.

    Abstract: An optical two-way transmission-receiver communications system utilizing a coaxial coupler in place of a standard coupler, the optical system being capable of operation either in a single or multiple wavelength mode by designing the coupling region to have the proper length (i.e., either in 3dB or WDM operation), and further comprising a transmitter and a detector adjacent a coaxial coupler. The detector of the system is provided with a hole in its center in order to allow the transmitter access to the core waveguide of the coaxial coupler. The coaxial coupler may be formed from a rod in tube structure with a core waveguide extension adjacent the Tx/Rx and an integral pigtail on the opposite side of the coupler.

    Abstract: A single mode optical waveguide fiber is provided which is dispersion shifted for use over a wavelength range of about 1500 nm to 1600 nm and which reduces non-linear optical effects. The core region of the fiber has a central core segment with maximum refractive index n0, and an annular segment having a maximum index n,. There is a clad layer, having a refractive index nc, surrounding said core region, and n0 > n1 > nc. The fiber has a total dispersion zero within the waveguide range of about 1500 nm to 1600 nm, but outside the limits from about 1540 nm to 1560 nm, an effective area of about 70 microns or greater, and a dispersion slope of about 0.12 ps/nm -km or less.

    Abstract: A hybrid, erbium doped fiber amplifier device has a dynamic gain tilt that is less than the gain tilt of any of the constituent fibers. The hybrid amplifying device has at most one less pumping source than the number of constituent waveguides of the device. The hybrid device automatically provides an effective change in the pump distribution among the constituent doped waveguide sections so as to achieve a readjustment of the relative gains of the constituent sections. As such, a change in the aggregate gain of the hybrid device will be as nearly spectrally uniform as possible over a range of gain values compared to the constituent doped waveguides. A method for constructing a hybrid optical amplifying device having improved dynamic gain tilt is also provided.
