Abstract: Prepn. of DMF (I) comprises reacting dimethylamine sulphate (II) with Ca formate (III) at >=90 degrees C and >=1.5 bar, pref. at 120-180 degrees C and 3-15 bar. Esp. reaction is carried out in a mixt. of water and lower alkanol. Yields of (I) are >75% and purity >=99.9%. The CaSO4 byprod. is in the form of the alpha-hemihydrate so can be used as gypsum. Also (II) can be generated in situ from H2SO4 and Me2NH. The method is also suitable for making other N-alkyl- or N-aryl-formamides from mono- or di-alkyl or aromatic amines.
