Abstract: 1355376 Time delay switching circuits ELECTRONICS CORP OF AMERICA 20 July 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 34021/71 Heading H3T [Also in Division F4] Combustion of a burner is initiated by closing contacts 60-2 of a switch 60 to connect a capacitor 62, previously charged through contacts 60-1, to the base of a transistor 72 which actuates a transistor 46 to open a fuel valve 50, thus allowing an ignition attempt. The period allowed for ignition is determined by the discharging of capacitor 62 which switches off transistor 72 to close valve 50 unless successful ignition holds the valve open by means of an ultra violet sensor 20 which switches on a transistor 36 through a transformer 26 when a flame is present, and thus keeps transistor 46 in its conducting state.

Abstract: A system condition indicator for monitoring a number of interlock switches and fuel valves to detect what event first occurs to shut down a burner control system. The monitoring circuitry is periodically strobed once each cycle of the lower line signal and is only responsive to an abnormal interlock switch or fuel valve during the strobe time. The present invention does not respond to an abnormal condition for a predetermined time after burner operation is initiated, to allow the system parameters to go to their operational values. The present invention includes circuitry for monitoring the pilot fuel flow and the main fuel flow and for providing an indication if either flow is abnormally terminated to shut down the furnace system. When the furnace system is shut down in response to an abnormal condition, an indication is provided of the first interlock switch or fuel valve to open, allowing a determination to be made of what caused the furnace failure, either during start-up or during normal operation.

Abstract: A burner control apparatus for use with a fuel installation that has an operating control to produce a request for burner operation, a flame sensor to produce a signal when flame is present in the monitored combustion chamber, and one or more devices for control of ignition and/or fuel flow. The burner control apparatus comprises lockout apparatus for de-energizing the control apparatus; a control device for actuating the ignition and/ or fuel control devices, and a timing circuit that provides four successive and partially overlapping timing intervals of precise relation, including a purge timing interval, a pilot ignition interval, and a main fuel ignition interval. The present invention further includes a burner control system which verifies the proper operation of certain sensors in a burner or furnace including particularly the air flow sensor. Additionally, the present system also prevents an attempt to ignite a burner if a condition is detected which indicates that the air flow sensor has been bypassed or wedged in the actuated position.

Abstract: A burner control apparatus for use with a furnace installation that has an operating control to produce a request for burner operation, a flame sensor to produce a signal when flame is present in the monitored combustion chamber, one or more devices for control of ignition and relay fuel flow, and a modulator controlling air and fuel flow to a main burner for varying heat output. The burner control apparatus comprises a lockout relay for shutting down the furnace, a control device for actuating the ignition and fuel control devices, and a timing circuit that provides several successive and partially overlapping timing intervals of precise relation, including a purge interval, a pilot ignition interval, and a main fuel ignition interval. The present invention includes circuitry for providing a purge interval with the modulator at a high air flow setting. After the purge interval, pilot flame ignition is prevented until the modulator has been moved to a low fire position. The present invention further includes a burner control system which verifies the proper operation of certain sensors in a burner or furnace including particularly a fuel valve end switch, an air flow switch, and modulator position switches.

Abstract: A burner control apparatus includes a timing circuit for providing two successive timing intervals of precise duration, one being a pre-ignition timing interval and the other being an ignition timing interval. The timing circuit includes a capacitor the charging rate of which determines one of the timing intervals and the discharge rate of which determines the other timing interval. In response to a call for burner operation a blower is energized to purge the burner of potentially explosive gases during the pre-ignition timing interval. When the pre-ignition interval comes to an end relays are energized to energize a pilot fuel control and an ignition control. If a flame is sensed during the ignition interval a further relay is energized closing the ignition control and switching over from pilot to main fuel control. If no flame is sensed during this interval a lockout actuator shuts down the entire burner and energizes an alarm. If after establishment of normal burner operation the flame goes out, the cycle of two successive timing intervals is repeated. The flame sensor and lockout actuator are connected directly to a power supply so that power is applied to the flame sensor and lockout circuitry independently of a request for burner operation but the control circuitry for initiating an ignition sequence is energized only after a request for burner operation.
