Abstract: Methods of controlling the power levels of transmitted signals in telecommunication systems are described. For example, a remote terminal measures the quality of a received signal, either by determining the frame error rate or the bit error rate, and reports its quality measurement to a network by sending a quality message. The network causes the signal transmitters to adjust their transmit power levels appropriately. Faster power control methods may be combined with slower power control methods for downlink (network to remote terminal) transmissions in various communications scenarios, such as soft hand-overs.

Abstract: THE TRANSMIT POWER OF A BASE STATION TRANSMISSION TO A MOBILE STATION IS ADVANTAGEOUSLY CONTROLLED. THE BASE STATION RECEIVES A SIGNAL FROM THE MOBILE STATION AND DETERMINES A SIGNAL-TO-INTERFERENCE RATIO (SIR) ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECEIVED SIGNAL. THE BASE STATION CONTROLS ITS TRANSMIT POWER TO THE MOBILE STATION USING THE DETERMINED SIR VALUE IN CONJUNCTION WITH A TRANSMIT POWER CONTROL COMMAND RECEIVED FROM THE MOBILE STATION. WHEN THE MOBILE STATION IS IN THE PROCESS OF A SOFT HANDOVER INVOLVING TWO OR MORE BASE STATIONS, EACH OF THOSE BASE STATIONS DETERMINES AN SIR VALUE ASSOCIATED WITH A SIGNAL RECEIVED FROM THE MOBILE STATION. MOREOVER, EACH OF THE BASE STATIONS CONTROLS ITS RESPECTIVE POWER USING BOTH THE POWER CONTROL COMMAND RECEIVED FROM THE MOBILE STATION AND THE SIR DETERMINED BY THE BASE STATION. SIMILARLY, WHEN THE MOBILE STATION IS IN THE PROCESS OF SOFTER HANDOVER INVOLVING TWO OR MORE SECTORS OF A SINGLE BASE STATION, THE SIR ASSOCIATED WITH A SIGNAL RECEIVED FROM THE MOBILE STATION IN EACH OF THOSE BASE STATION SECTORS IS DETERMINED AND USED TO CONTROL THE RESPECTIVE POWER OF EACH BASE STATION SECTOR IN CONJUNCTION WITH A POWER CONTROL COMMAND RECEIVED FROM THE MOBILE STATION.

Abstract: A method of stabilizing a communication system having base stations and mobile stations using integrated control of both signal transmission power levels and signal congestion levels. In particular, the method includes measuring a quality such as a signal to interference ratio of a signal transmitted from a mobile station to a base station and measuring a total received signal power at the base station. The signal transmission power of the mobile station is changed based on comparisons of the measured signals with predetermined threshold values. When the measured total received signal power at the base station exceeds the corresponding predetermined threshold value, a congestion control algorithm is executed to reduce the signal congestion level.

Abstract: The transmit power of a base station transmission to a mobile station is advantageously controlled. The base station receives a signal from the mobile station and determines a signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) associated with the received signal. The base station controls its transmit power to the mobile station using the determined SIR value in conjunction with a transmit power control command received from the mobile station. When the mobile station is in the process of a soft handover involving two or more base stations, each of those base stations determines an SIR value associated with a signal received from the mobile station. Moreover, each of the base stations controls its respective power using both the power control command received from the mobile station and the SIR determined by that base station. Similarly, when the mobile station is in the process of softer handover involving two or more sectors of a single base station, the SIR associated with a signal received from the mobile station in each of those base station sectors is determined and used to control the respective power of each base station sector in conjunction with a power control command received from the mobile station.

Abstract: The method involves transmitting power level control commands from a remote station to the base stations from which the remote station is receiving signals, to control the power levels of the signals transmitted by the base stations. A determination is made whether the remote station is simultaneously receiving a signal transmitted by a base station and a second signal transmitted by a second base station that include identical message information. A report of a power level of the first signal is transmitted to a controller from the base station. A second report of a power level of the second signal is transmitted to the controller from the second base station. A comparison is made in the controller the first report and the one second report. A command is transmitted from the controller to the first base station to adjust the power level of the first signal. The method transmits from the controller to the second base station a second command adjusting the power level of the second signal, the power level control commands are transmitted less frequently from the remote station to the base stations when the remote station receives signals from more than one base station than when the remote station receives signals from only one base station. The same power level control commands are transmitted several times from the remote station to the base stations when the remote station receives signals from more than one base station.
