Abstract: PURPOSE:To suppress the deformation of a core by heating and the deterioration in a loss characteristic by forming a thin-film layer by a low-temp. CVD method, then heating this thin-film layer, thereby annealing the thin-film layer. CONSTITUTION:A core layer 24 which consists mainly of SiO2 and has a relatively high refractive index is formed by a flame deposition method on an under clad 22 which consists mainly of the SiO2 and has a relatively low refractive index. The core layer 24 is then subjected to pattern etching to form the core 24' of a prescribed shape. The thin-film layer 26 mainly consisting of the Sin. is formed by a low-temp. CVD method on the under clad 22 so as to cover the outside surface of the core 24'. The thin-film layer is annealed by heating and an outer clad 28 which consists mainly of the SiO2 and has the refractive index equal to the refractive index of the under clad 22 is formed by a flame deposition method on the thin-film layer 26. Then, the possibility of generating bubbles in the thin-film layer 26, etc., is eliminated at the time of forming the outer clad 28' by heating and vitrifying.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To smooth the fusion of a side surface and to prevent the increase of a loss caused by the imperfect fusion by vibrating an optical fiber by ultrasonic wave at least until the fusion of the side surface is finished. CONSTITUTION:Heating of the optical fibers 20 and 22 by a burner 18 is started by previously actuating a light source device 24 and an ultrasonic wave generator 30. Then, when tensile force is added to the fibers 20 and 22 by actuating fine adjustable stages 14 and 16 by delaying timing a little, the side surface of a part softened by the heating is fused and the stretch thereof is started. In accordance with it, light which is made incident only on a light receiving device 26 is also made incident on a light receiving device 28 by coupling. Then, in the case that the branching ratio of 50% is obtained, for example, the burner 18 and the fine adjustable stages 14 and 16 are stopped when the respective light receiving levels become equal. At such a time, the ultrasonic wave is impressed until the optical coupling is started.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To measure the refractive index of a multilayer plane wave guide path by obtaining a critical angle for each layer from relationship between the incidence angle of light on a prism brought into close contact with the outermost layer of a multilayer plane wave guide path and the intensity of light emitted from the end of the wave guide path of each layer. CONSTITUTION:A prism 4 is brought into close contact with a wave guide path 2b on the outermost layer of a multilayer plane wave guide path 2 by pressing means 10. He-Ne laser light emitted from the light output device 14a of a light source unit 14 fixedly attached to a rotary table 8 is incident on the prism 4. The incidence angle of the laser light on the prism 4 is measured by an incidence angle measuring device 12 wherein a table 8 is used. Further, the intensity of light emitted from the wave guide path ends 2b and 2c of the respective layers of the wave guide path 2 is detected by light power meters 18 and 20 opposed to light input portions 16 and 17, respectively. From relationship between the intensities of light detected by the meters 18 and 20 and the incidence angle onto the prism 4 measured by the measuring device 12, a critical angle and therefore the refractive index of the multilayer plane wave guide path 2 can be obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make an extinction ratio large by controlling in such a way that the aspect ratio and coupling cycle of a fiber fused type optical coupler is in a specific value range. CONSTITUTION:Two parallel-provided single mode optical fibers 12, 14 are heated to the specified temperature by a burner 10 so as to be fused at the side faces. It is so controlled that an aspect ratio is in a range of 1.85-1.95 at the time of fusing. The temperature of the burner 10 is then lowered to continue heating the fused part, and at the same time, the optical fibers 12, 14 are pulled in both directions so as not to cause cross-sectional deformation to the fused part. The fused part is thus elongated in such a way that a coupling cycle is made more than 15. An extinction ratio can be thereby made large.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a preform giving a rare earth dope fiber capable of obtaining high gain in wide wavelength range by forming soot-like core glass on the inner wall of a quartz reaction tube and successively impregnating a rare earth element compound and an Al compound into the core glass, and then heating the core glass to carry out collapse. CONSTITUTION:Oxide glass fine powder is deposited in a quartz reaction tube 14 by a vapor phase reaction and vitrified by heating using a burner 16 to form a clad glass film 30. Then, shoot-like core glass 32 is similarly formed on the clad glass film 30. A solution dissolving a rate earth element compound (e.g. ErCl3.6H2O) as a solute is fed from a feed tube 28 to the core glass 32 to impregnate the solution into soot-like core glass 32 and the core glass 32 is heated to evaporate the solvent. Then, a solution dissolving an Al compound (e.g. AlCl3) as a solute is fed thereon to again impregnate the solution into the core glass 32 and the solvent is evaporated at ordinary temperature. The quartz reaction tube 14 is subjected to collapse treatment by heating the tube 14 with the burner 16 to provide the preform for rare earth doped fiber.
