Abstract: 906,439. Magnetic bearings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 15, 1960, No. 1562/60. Class 12 (1). [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVII] A dynamo - electric machine (see Group XXXV) has a hollow, cylindrical rotor 12 supported entirely magnetically, the rotor and the supporting field coils being made of superconducting material, e.g. niobium, and maintained at a suitable temperature, i.e. close to absolute zero. The rotor has an internal flange 40 on either side of which are coils 44, 46 while further sets of coils 43, 45 face the internal wall of the rotor to provide lateral stabilizing forces. The action is based on the fact that magnetic flux cannot penetrate a superconductor so that if a part of the rotor approaches a particular coil magnetic " pressure " is exerted to restore it to an equilibrium position. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 8, not shown), the coils are disposed on the outside of a closed cylindrical rotor.
