    Abstract: Apparatus (20) for delivering a newly formed floating glass sheet from a molten metal bath container (22) including a linear induction motor (24) that permits horizontal delivery without bath overflow is disclosed as including a gas support (34) and a drive roll (42) that cooperate with each other. The gas support (34) supports the horizontally delivered glass sheet strip by upwardly directed pressurized gas delivered between lateral edge portions (38) of the strip at a location immediately adjacent the bath container (22). The drive roll (42) is located downstream from the molten metal bath (24) and has spaced drive portions (44) that rotatively drive the lateral edge portions (38) of the glass sheet strip without the drive roll engaging the strip between the spaced drive portions. Gas support (34) preferably includes a first manifold (46) that supplies an upwardly directed inert gas and also preferably includes a second manifold (50) that supplies products of combustion from a gas burner.

    Abstract: A glass melter (30) having a mixing impeller (34) for converting a feed stream (38) supplied to a vessel (32) into a vitrified glass melt (50). Heating means such as electrodes (36) or a gas burner (58) are used to heat the glass melt (50). Electrode (36) arrangements are proposed for minimizing current flow through the impeller (34).     Abstract: Apparatus (38) and a method for forming a flat glass sheet is disclosed as utilizing a heating conveyor (42) that transfers a heated flat glass sheet to a downwardly facing surface (46) of a topside transfer device (44), a lower mold (48) having an upwardly facing full surface (50) at least a portion of which has an upwardly convex shape that receives the heated flat glass sheet from the topside transfer device, and an upper ring mold (52) that forms and seals the periphery of the heated glass sheet against the vacuum mold surface (50) at which a vacuum is supplied within the sealed periphery of the glass sheet to form the entire extent of the glass sheet to the vacuum mold surface. A vacuum is then provided within a vacuum chamber (122) of the upper ring mold (52) to receive the formed glass sheet from the lower vacuum mold for support by the upper ring mold. A cooling mold (132) which may either be an annealing ring (132a) or a quench ring (132b) is also preferably provided to receive the formed glass sheet from the upper ring mold (52) for cooling in order to provide either annealing or tempering of the formed glass sheet.

    Abstract: A heated glass sheet topside support device (22, 22', 22a, 22a') is disclosed as including horizontally extending lower and upper plates (38, 46) connected by a set of vertically extending passage members embodied by tubes (54) or plate members (54a) to define passages (55, 55a, 55a'). The support device also includes first and second manifolds (56, 58) for supplying pressurized gas and a vacuum through first and second sets of holes (42, 42a, 42a'; 44, 44a, 44a') in the lower plate so as to thereby support a heated glass sheet below the lower plate without any engagement. In one construction, the pressurized gas is supplied through a chamber (48, 48a) between the plates through a set of shorter tubes (80, 80a) mounted within the first set of holes (42, 42a) in the lower plate (38, 38a), and a vacuum is drawn from the upper side of the upper plate (46, 46a) through the holes (52, 52a) therein and through the passages (55, 55a) and the second set of holes (44, 44a).

    Abstract: Provided is a support assembly for mounting an array of photovoltaic panels to a support surface such as the ground. According to the invention, there is provided a plurality of front and rear support posts, each post having an anchor portion to be driven into the support surface and a leg portion which is nested therein and longitudinally adjustable to raise or lower corresponding front and rear horizontal supports. Photovoltaic panels are mounted lengthwise across the horizontal supports in a predetermined position to minimize the stress thereon caused by wind load.     Abstract: A glass sheet tempering method and resultant glass sheet are disclosed as being provided by modulated quenching that initially cools oppositely facing surfaces of a conveyed glass sheet (G) at a first cooling station (14) with a first rate of heat transfer for a finite time to cool the surfaces from tempering temperature to below the strain point without cooling the center of the glass sheet below the strain point. Thereafter the oppositely facing surfaces of the conveyed glass sheet are cooled within a second cooling station (15) at a second rate of heat transfer less than the first rate to initially cool the center of the glass sheet below the strain point without corresponding surface cooling, and thereafter to cool the center and the surface. The modulated quenching provides a relatively large ratio of surface compression to center tension without excessive magnitudes of stress.
