Abstract: A high temperature-resistant, multi-phase ceramic with a content of 25 - 85% by weight of crystalline beta -silicon nitride, 11 to 70% by weight of crystalline, cubic HfO2 and an amorphous glass phase which, in addition to silicon, contains at least one of the elements magnesium, yttrium and/or of the rare earths and, if appropriate, aluminium, has good mechanical properties. … To produce this, a mixture of 25 - 85% by weight of pulverulent alpha -silicon nitride, 11 to 70% by weight of monoclinic HfO2 and 5 - 20% by weight of at least one oxide of the elements magnesium, yttrium and/or of the rare earths (from Sm-Yb) are moulded to form a body, and the latter is dense-sintered at 1700 - 2000 DEG C.
