    Abstract: Partially fluorinated carboxylic acids of structure (I), their acid chlorides and anhydrides, are new. In formulae, R = H or -COOH (acid chloride with R = H only, anhydrides with R = -COOH only). Also claimed is a process for the prepn. of cpds. (I) and related cpds. of structure (II); where X = gp. of formulae (IIa) or (IIb); and their acid chlorid=s and anhydrides (defined as for I). The process entails oxidn. of the corresp. methyl cpds. by atmospheric O2 at high pressure in an acidic medium in the presence of a catalyst mixt. comprising heavy metal acetates in admixture with a bromide co-catalyst. The resulting carboxylic acids are elaborated to the corresp. derivs. by improved procedures .

    Abstract: Prepn. of bromo- or chloro-aromatic carboxylic acids (I) involves oxidn. of the corresp. halo-alkyl-aromatics (II) with (gas contg.) O2 in acetic acid as solvent and in the presence of a transition metal bromide as catalyst. The novel features are that: (a) the reaction mixt. contains a Na and/or K salt of a weak acid; (b) the reaction soln. is cooled when reaction has ceased and the crystalline prod. is filtered off; (c) the combined mother liquor and washings are dehydrated by distn. to reduce the water content to at most 1.0%; (d) the pptd. alkali halide is filtered from the mother liquor and (e) the mother liquor is recycled as reaction medium.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of high-purity perfluorinated compounds, specifically of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid and its anhydride, 5,5'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)-ethylidene]bis-1,3-isobenzof urandione, by a multi-step treatment of the crude compounds. The metal ion content of the compounds treated is reduced considerably. After polymerization with an aromatic diamine, the anhydride is used in microelectronics.
